On Trusting AdminsYou shouldn't have to trust your server admin. If you do, that's perfectly fine.Ideally, it is more like Debian. I don't have to trust a single *particular* Debian admin, but trust the system all of them have put in place over the decades.Fediverse servers can be the same. Is it just one person with all control? Do they have a publicly stated policies for federation, moderation, etc? Are they in a "good" jurisdiction?1/

One practice I had in place when I was an Indymedia admin ~20 years ago, pretty much seeing similar things to what we see today, was separating the moderation from the system administration. It is best to have one group doing moderation, and a totally different group that just focuses on servers running, backups, updates, etc.The *rough* line would be "if it can be done in a browser, it's moderation; if it is done in a terminal command line, it's system administration".2/

Problems that existed back then, exist on today's Internet, but orders of magnitude worse. It is an endless game of whack-a-mole, smacking idiots posting trash, attacks, etc.One old Internet motto, showing it's age, was "Be conservative in what you send, liberal in what you receive". Those words meant a lot different things back then, but the broad idea was your system should accept whatever packets come in gracefully, but be cautious with what your machine sends.3/

But receiving *whatever*, broadly, means whoever the-f* can send you trash all day long and you have to block it, mitigate it, etc.Brainstorming here, but perhaps we should turn that upside down now.Start with a default block of everything. Then *with utter caution* federate with other servers that have shown themselves worthy.4/

@jebba would you be willing to move to, put all instances into approval-list; where rejection leads to block / de-fed?My question is about the permanence of auto-blocking.By giving an admin visibility "hey, your users are talking to, or being talked about by {domain}"; there is a place they can come to (one time implied) decide."Oh this one has nazi's" -> block.Or "Oh wow, fooone is on there, doing interesting retro things" -> allow

@lewiscowles1986 Well, once you realize it has "nazis" or whatever, the damage is already done.

@jebba but by putting it in that list it's functionally the same as your auto-block isn't it. Until admin approves; messages cannot get through.Btw sorry for not using moderator as language, but I don't know if all instances will be large enough to spread roles like that.

@lewiscowles1986 By auto-block do you mean default block?I'm not suggesting to create a huge list of domains to block. The list is of domains that are approved. By default everything would be blocked.Moderators, whether of their own domain or larger installs could also add a known-good approved list.Sort of what @oliphant is doing, but in reverse. So instead of downloading their blocklist, you can just download their approved list and be off and running.

@jebba @lewiscowles1986 @oliphant But……that seems stupid. Who has time to vet thousands or tens of thousands of sites?

@Leyonhjelm @ericdano @jebba @lewiscowles1986 @oliphant You can't control what other people do, you can only control yourself, by not acting like the kind of niggerfaggot who inevitably gets Trolled.
