oh that reminds me, is there such a thing as a managed ethernet switch that- doesn't use heaps of power- is gigabit or better- is quiet- can be obtained for $100 or less- (optionally) is smaller than a typical rackmount switch

@izaya I can recommend mikrotik switches for these requirements.Alternatively tplink, netgear and dlink all have cheap "smart managed" switches with a wide varity of shittiness in the ui.If you are feeling experimental: the rtl838x series of chips is capable of running openwrt (the rtl93xx too but we are still far away from openwrt working nicely on those)

@izaya I think most OpenWrt-capable routers have a built-in switch chip that can be managed from the CPU, so if you can find one of those that can do gigabit and is below $100, that's one option. There are also things like netgear gs108ge or mamaged variants of tp-link sg108* which are small 8-port switches with basic management features.

@izaya Ubiquiti makes a nice 5-port managed gigabit switch for $30USD, don't know if you're looking for something bigger than that

@izaya (oh but you also have to run a silly management server thing to configure the managed switch parts)

@littlefox this one might be a winner$130-ish with PoE when I can track down some APssure I could probably get a Catalyst 3750G for less money with PoE support but those things idle at like 150W and scream under load so

@littlefox do you have any opinions about the management? it's talking a lot about "cloud management" and that's not something I want to deal with. I imagine it has a web interface but..?
