In a lot of rhetorical questions about "AI" you can basically just replace "AI" with "powerful people" to get to the actual question. The tech is just a multiplier of power imbalances already in full force.

@tante And conversely with any new technology. It's not the means but who controls the means

@tante More recently, also influenced by your and Meredith's great talks on RePublica, I started replacing AI in my head with "modern automation" whenever I hear people talk about it, and that makes a difference already. That's not exactly what you saying, I'm aware, but follows the same spirit. Both makes sense, I think. I think at the moment it helps to choose proper language depending on target audience, including techbros and people spreading the "AI stealing jobs" narrative.(1/2)

@tante I guess „AI“ („KI“ in German) is a also popular term in print an online media because it is short: perfect for headlines.Any suggestions for a short alternative term?(Actually serious question because it could help.)

@tante this applies to all tech, no tech, AI included is bad, but the people that run this rockshow are bad, and they'll use any and all technologies to maintain their positions at the top

@tante AI powerhouses and VC fuelled startups have the legal capital to scoff at the IP/copyright/privacy issues of scraping the web to consume others' content to build their own IP. Unlike search engines (who always have done this), they provide the trained result/product to their customers for a profit, without any attribution or links back to their sources (I.e credit). But then they scoff when the sources they scrape begin to want to charge for their API use. Crazy stuff.

@tante You can not! This AI is something betwden a Human Brain and a Computer Alhgorith with in and Output. So it can, if the AI know your digital path, act like your best friend to nudge you...
