When you say or write a word too many times, it can stop even looking like a word. It's a process called "semantic satiation," and it's fascinating. I can tell this is going to be one of my all-time favorite episodes many years down the line. @grammargirl “Semantic satiation" has a nice ring to it, too.

@grammargirl this is one of my favourite phenomena. I kinda love it when it happens. And as a programmer it happens quite often.

@grammargirl Did you experience semantic satiation at any point while writing or recording the podcast episode?

@waynedixon Not that one, but I did during a podcast before it, which is why I wrote this piece!

@grammargirl Off topic, but I just heard about metrophobia. That might be a future topic for you?

@grammargirl I just had that experience this morning with "squirrel." You don't have to say squirrel very many times for semantic satiation to kick in. It's a squirrelly word! Happily, the term semantic satiation was in a readily accessible brain file because just a few days ago I heard Coach Beard tell Coach Lasso about it.

@grammargirl @NicoleCRust Believe it or not, semantic satiation was a repeated theme on a Ted Lasso episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymfC_iji6Z0
