I'm never sure whether to include quotation marks around words used as words in alt text. For example, I would normally write something like"Solstice" comes from a Latin word. But is it annoying to have the quotation marks read aloud from a screen reader?

@grammargirl Most screen readers don't actually read the quotes by default (In fact, none that I can think of), so go for it.

@grammargirl On many screen readers, how punctuation is read is highly configurable. On iOS for example you can even have different modes and switch between them depending on what/how you'd like to hear things. So it's very much up to the user. Also, keeping them is good for folks using braille devices!

@sommer Thank you! I wouldn't have thought of braille devices.

@grammargirl @Estrella The only screen readers I’ve used are the ones that are built into macOS and iOS, and like Estelle said, the quotes aren’t explicitly stated (and I don’t know of any relevant options for those screen readers to enable explicit indication of quotes). The existence of quotes does, I believe, prompt a slight pause at each quote boundary, which I find to be pretty good at signaling what is quoted (along with other context clues, naturally).

@grammargirl Oh, I'd like to know the answer to this too. I would think not include the quotes because when speaking, you would mention them.

@grammargirl some speech synthesizers will use the quotes as a hint to slightly boost the pitch range (e.g. Alex on macOS). It seems very natural to use quotes here, so it is probably more likely to enhance, rather than hurt, screen reader experience.
