So here's what makes me nervous about the Fediverse: Over the weekend, two admins had a disagreement & defederated their servers. They then resolved their differences and refederated. Only problem is, all follows across those two servers were broken and people now need to recreate them manually. And depending on whether or not they were following the drama, they may not even know why it happened. This is, in a word, bad. It puts a burden on users for something that was out of their control.

@rluxIt makes me crazy each time I see how easy for many admins is to just completely defederate with some server.I just can't embrace such irresponsible mindset.

@rlux agreed. automatic notification when relationships are severed by a defederation is a critical feature and i hope it's implemented soon.

@skobkin @rlux And yet, if it wasn't possible, your feed (the federated view, anyway) would be full of nazis, cryptodudes, and assorted other arseholes. (They all gather on servers that the sensible ones defederate from.)

@fishidwardrobe @rluxNo, it wouldn't.Because you can LIMIT server without completely blocking it. This way your users still would be able to communicate with people from another server if they're following them. It's good that there are some admins who are not too sensible to decide for others who they want to talk to. It's just killing me that this isn't a mainstream option for some reason.

@skobkin @rlux If the instance is a "nazi bar" then you block that crap. I'm 100% behind that. Sorry. I think you're wrong here.

@fishidwardrobe @rluxDoesn't sound like a good argument to me.There are lot of servers that are just "free speech" and not specifically intended for some marginal group of people.I know several people who are not in any such group, but still using servers like that because they just want a safe and stable place unlike Twitter. Some of them also want to be out of jurisdiction of their country because it has a bunch of sadistic laws.I don't see a reason why should I excommunicate them just because some of other users from their servers are %insert_your_tag_here%. It's like burning a house full of people because it's also contaminated by cockroaches.

@skobkin @rlux Aaand those servers will all become "nazi bars" unless the moderators are proactive on some other basis than "free speech". Seems like you might not be familiar with the reference to "nazi bars". Here you go: https://www.boredpanda.com/bar-bartender-nazi-punk-iamragesparkle/?utm_source=duckduckgo&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=organicNow, you may be entirely well-intentioned, but this is all starting to sound a bit sealion-y, so that's all the explanation you'll get from me. Nice talking to you!

@rlux@hachyderm.io This is why you should stick to small instances where people can trust their admins. Large, public instances are a very bad choice, and you will be hurt by them time and time again.

@rlux@hachyderm.io imo that's why instances shouldn't be so big in the first place, it's bad for the network's health

@rlux@hachyderm.io absolutely 💯I'm not going to make the argument that people "should just move" to another server, because that again puts the onus on users; however, I will note that the problem in this case—as it is in many cases, with many of the world's problems—stems from cis-het white guys in positions of power. Think of politicians in most of the world's superpowers, most billionaires and tech CEOs: a bunch of cis-het white guys on psychotic power trips fucking things up for the rest of the world. What the Fediverse needs—and, indeed, what the world needs—is more women, more black, brown, queer, and trans persons in leadership positions. In a nicer world, that would happen with these cis-het white guys doing some self-reflection and then ceding power when they realize that they have been the problem all along; but that's not the world we live in, so we're going to have to force these entitled dudes out in order to make space for voices that have too long been silenced, space for the marginalized and the oppressed to show us a better way forward. So while I don't think it's every Fedizen's responsibility to move, I do think that those of us who can should move to instances run by people other than white tech bros, and support those instance admins in whatever way we can.

@nisemikol@blahaj.zone @rlux@hachyderm.io This may be the most stupid post in the thread. You genuinely believe that only "cis-het white guys" are able to abuse power, which is downright retarded at best. Diversity in looks doesn't mean squat, all the groups you described are still just human beings, and they are all just as corruptible when given a large amount of power.Don't give them the power to corrupt themselves with, support a Fediverse in the way it's meant to be: lots and lots of small servers where people can trust one another, rather than a handful of super instances where the users just get hurt by the power plays of dumb admins.

@rlux This is a good reason for users on those servers to migrate to another server which has a more stable record. Admins must understand they are stewards of the community, not owners or dictators, and this behavior will drive people away, rightfully.

@fishidwardrobe @brennansv @rlux This is a crucial part I keep seeing folks gloss right over“Choose your instance carefully!”Based on what? It’s not like I can get a quick psych evaluation of each admin and how likely they are to defederate at the first hint of a disagreement. Many instances have similar rules and codes of conduct, but enforcement seems wildly different and unpredictable.I don’t want to have to wade through years of petty online drama to pick the right server.

so? better than being cut from communicating with my doctor, being unable to see any news from my hometown, being blocked from communicating with 99% of my friends who are on the fediverse and having person after person after person after person after person that I try to convince to use the fediverse give up because they are also unable to communicate with *their* friends and family or potential new workplaces or local doctors and lawyers and etc etc etc
