We're proud to release PeerTube v5.2 with a huge technical achievement: remote transcoding! Now even low-power and cheap servers can run a #PeerTube instance. Also: choose visibility of livestream replays, improved a11y, etc. Check out: https://joinpeertube.org/news/release-5.2

@peertube oh hell yeah, this is a big part of why I hadn't spun a peertube instance up yet(this and only having 20mbps upload, but one problem at a time)

@peertube Isn't Bandwidth the biggest issue for peertube servers?

@verita84 @peertube Depends on the Server, transcoding has long been problematic for VPS based instances. There is finally a direct solution availableBandwidth issues already have P2P, P2N and CDN support implemented that lessen server bandwidth needs. Storage is the other big constraint, and that's addressed by the s3 object storage. With transcoding support available, a $2/month server becomes fully viable.

@errhead @peertube That’s cool that it supports s3 now. How is bandwidth solved? If I upload a video, it only exists on my server. My video does not get replicated to other severs so they can p2p it out right ?

@verita84 @peertube nope.#PeerTube federation has a redundancy feature that copies the the video in all resolutions to federated instances that have the redundancy option checked. When the video is served out, the chunks are downloaded from randomly selected servers of those available. The more instances federating and supplying redundancy the greater the bandwidth reduction. Here's a recent example video from noagendatube.comWith popular videos the p2p kicks for simultaneous viewers.

@jonathan I (hi I'm Pouhiou, and I'm not a developer) can't tell about using GPU power: the technical documentation in linked in the news https://docs.joinpeertube.org/admin/remote-runnersBut yes, the feature has been thought out so one big machine can transcode videos from several instances. That's what we mean by "encouraging communities to work together" in the news.I hope you enjoy it!

@jonathan @peertube For now remote runners can't use GPU, but it's something we can easily add in the future. The runner API is public (https://docs.joinpeertube.org/api-rest-reference.html#tag/Runners) so you can also create your own runner program, or just fork the existing one et adjust ffmpeg parameters

@verita84 @peertube @errhead Remote runners really do help a lot, and offloading by other means such as podcast feeds will help take load off of the API also. The storage isn't *that* bad, as long as we divide and conquer the resources. You'll pay a lot more at a large cloud provider.
