If you upload your photos to Google's cloud, and do so as your sole means of backup, you shouldn't...and this is why. There WILL come a day where Google (or any cloud provider) will close their cloud, and your images will go with it.Consider self-hosting at home or on a VPS with @nextcloud or something similar.https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/18/23765096/google-album-archive-is-going-away-on-july-19th-2023

@tilvids @nextcloud Absolutely agree... And for users with less IT background, buying a good #NAS like #synology offers, might be a good solution to start. They provide photo backup tools and the more high-spec models even allow you to run #docker so you're not locked to their software. You should however keep backups in the cloud or with a friend (and Synology has a nice tool for this as well).

@tilvids @nextcloud Now that is spooky, I was only yesterday, chatting to one of the parents at code club about the issue she has with her google phone, lots of photos but no easy way to get them off the phone and just as here I suggested nextcloud as a solution. I have sent her a link to disroot. but the fact this advice pops up is a great coincidence. Thanks

@tilvids @nextcloud I received an email about this exact warning from them yesterday. Google kills everything that’s good!Honestly, they will kill YouTube someday. It’s all in a matter of time. May #PeerTube rise!

@tilvids @nextcloud @thelinuxEXP What would you recommend as a replacement for Google Photos? I have 10GB of S3-compatible cloud storage at my disposal, but I'm not currently able to host anything like NextCloud or Piwigo. I also (somewhat begrudgingly) use an iPhone, which would need a client of some kind.I could pay for ente or for extra storage on Cryptee, but I'd prefer something free as in free beer (as well as FOSS).

@tilvids @nextcloud good life tip is just to never rely on any 3rd party you have no control over for anything so important

@tilvids @nextcloud I have to say it's misleading news, because all actual photo cloud "sync" photo device to cloud, even if I do not use google cloud saying "if they close all photo are lost are really misleading (if not false with some provider)

@tilvids @nextcloud All in support of self hosting but considering the costs and the know-how needed, this is not it for average or even above average people..Giants like Google are not going away that easily and suddenly that you won't even have time to recover your media before it goes

@tilvids @nextcloud @cainmark but please backup somewhere! That is one of the things we’ve enjoyed with Google Photos so take a look at Backblaze S2 for backup or something similiar.

@tilvids @nextcloud What if you self-host and your house burns down?I copy things to the cloud to *back up* what I have on my own machine. And I copy to more than one, since the odds of 2+ providers folding at the same time is unlikely. My first choice is S3 and I doubt they are going anywhere.

@tilvidsWhile I agree and currently migrating from Google drive to self-hosted Nextcloud most people wouldn't spend time for this. Normal people just want the product working not having the power on their data.@nextcloud

@tilvids @nextcloud General rule of thumb is: one backup is no backup, two backups is one backup.Relying only on one thing as a sole means of backup WILL always be risky. If something is really important to you, you shouldn't rely on having only one backup. Even if it's a self-hosted NAS or Nextcloud, they too can fail.
