People act like Gmail came in and afterwards there were no more email providers. Did a lot of people use it? Yes. Did it somehow kill off all off the small email providers? No. Some of them? Sure. All? No. Why did I switch from Gmail to Proton? Because I stopped trusting Gmail. And felt that I could trust Proton more. Can I still email someone that uses Gmail? Yes. Do I have to support Gmail? No.The purpose of an open protocol is choice. Otherwise why bother making it open?

@Mrfunkedude @rosenbergite What really sucks here is that if any of us want to run our own mail servers, the big dogs like Gmail reject or flag e-mails we send out as spam even after we've jumped through hoops like DKIM, SPF, and DMARC. :blobfoxdisapprove:

@Mrfunkedude it killed most small and self-hosted emails, because they are treated like spam. So now only the biggest can do it. Even non-profit specialised in that domain struggle to keep that service.

@Mrfunkedude This reminds me about a post of a person killing their email server after 23 years.https://cfenollosa.com/blog/after-self-hosting-my-email-for-twenty-three-years-i-have-thrown-in-the-towel-the-oligopoly-has-won.htmlWhy? Because the big companies made sure to make it as hard as possible to run your own server.Open protocols are a choice, but once they're dominated by a few companies the options are limited.

@radmen @Mrfunkedude It's a sibling phenomenon of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. :blobfoxannoyed:

@tdelmas I have a small personal email that's been working fine for years. So do millions of businesses out there that use small private email servers. Gmail didn't kill email. Did some die or struggle? Of course they did. Can I still email anyone from any server I want? Of course I can.Again, Gmail didn't kill email. I'm not saying Google is a great company, I'm just saying some of the panic was unwarranted. Not all of it. Some of it.

@Mrfunkedude @tdelmasFor the record:I have maintained my own mail server for decades. It is compliant with all standards including rDNS, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. It generates zero spam. I monitor hundreds of DNSBLs, I am rarely listed, and I get delisted promptly when I am.Despite all this, emails my wife and I send out regularly get bounced by other email providers. Microsoft is the biggest but not the only culprit. My point: thanks to consolidation, maintaining a private mail server is harder.
