I love summer thunderstorms, the way you can feel it building up in the air before it happens, the distant thunder and the first few raindrops hitting the dusty dry ground, and then suddenly all of that tension built up in the air erupts into this beautiful spectacle. I love the smell in the air and the way the light reflects in the rain. I love opening my window and watching, listening to, and feeling the thunderstorm sometimes for hours at night. Something about it feels freeing, a brief moment the monotony of everyday life gets broken and this awe-inspiring force of nature breaks loose. I love watching as lightening dances across the sky and I love hearing the soothing noise of the rain interrupted by the deep, haunting, voice-like rumbling of thunder. I feel kind of sad as the birds begin to sing and the rain slowly falls silent, hoping the storm will stay just a little longer before the world returns to normalcy and the storm comes to an end.

(And yes, I know this is a pretty privileged perspective since I can watch this from the comfort of my home, unlike those who don’t have a home)

The thunderstorm has ended. A feeling of yearning washes over me as I close the window and the curtains. Normalcy has returned with all its oppressive weight. Faintly I see one last flash of lightening, and I feel heavy and light at the same time.
