As an Emacs user with an Emacs themed domain, it made me sad to have to post a Fediblock against emacs.ch, but after getting nowhere with the admin and multiple users (including me) being targeted for harassment, it had to be done.https://emacsen.net/@babka@babka.social/110577171076991820#emacs

@emacsen emacs is super cool but *sigh* .... I gotta be honest I am not super surprised by this. The emacs community is full of so many interesting people but also it seems you can be a loud asshole to people and just get away with it..

@Alonealastalovedalongthe @emacsen I might be missing something, but you know you can just block people instead of trying to blame an entire community?I had to do that with one particularly annoying account, took 5 seconds.

@emacsen Damn! That sucks. Honestly, foss communities should be some of the most progressive communities that exist due to the inherent egalitarian concept of itDon't get me wrong, a lot are, but it shocks me sometimes that these people exist in our communities

@boo_ I don't think that they are anti-progressive so much as I think blind spots around certain types of behavior. In this case, it was one user going on multiple user's timelines, accusing them of various things that aren't true, spamming hashtags, etc.But I think that unless you've been the victim of such a thing, you see it as "fighting" rather than as a pattern. The other half also deserves attention...1/2

@boo_ Choosing to take administrative action against one of your own users is hard. It's really, really hard.Every time I've done it, I've been uncomfortable, and most of the time when I do, they react very strongly negative. But it's the task they volunteered for and they need to do it.2/2

@emacsen @boo_ @galdor @Alonealastalovedalongthe As the administrator of Emacs.ch, I must vehemently disagree with the accusation. We reacted quickly to the reports and discussed the insinuations of babka.social intensively with the moderators of babka.social in a process that lasted for 24 hours and took at least 8 hours of work. The entire process is recorded in writing in a 14-page document. As a result, we have decided to admonish the user on our site and to follow up on babka.social's demands not to interact with them anymore (to our knowledge, that hasn't happened yet either). To ensure that there are no more interactions, we have preventively defederated the instance in consultation with the lead moderator of babka.social. This was done by mutual agreement. That such a smear campaign is started against our instance and against a Jewish user of our instance, I consider very reprehensible. Our instance is focused on the Emacs and programmer community. But of course we don't ban any user when they express their own opinion as long as they are in the boundaries of our server rules. If babka.social does not retract these insinuations, we will make the 14-page moderation document, which was worked out together with babka.social, public.

@Alonealastalovedalongthe @galdor@emacs.ch I doubt he's joking. This is much the same attitude we got from the admin. We've made the decision not to share the dialogue between us and the admin, but it was dismissive and rude, and I viewed it as punishing those who spoke up.I suppose Victor should have "blocked" the guy who put a swastika with a ham outside his door, too.If you need to know what privilege looks like... it's "Why don't you just block" rather than addressing the harasser.

@emacsen Since you are directly talking about me personally, I have the conversion archived. I ask you to make the whole conversation public (and not only parts of it) including the conversion that happend during the 8 hours of work I did together with your lead moderator in the CryptoPad document and I wrote and was amended by your lead moderator. We followed your demands to the letter, admonished our user and, with in consultation with your lead mod, we deferated to ensure the safety of your and our community.Your post puts what actually happened in a false light and it saddens me. As the admin of our instance, it is my job to ensure that the rules are followed, but also for the safety of our users, who come from all walks of life incl. Jews, Arabs, Christians, Buddhists, LGBTQ+. Whart unites us is our passion for technology and mutual respect for each other. Even though I have invested over 8 hours of time and was still praised by your lead moderator for how quickly we responded in contrast to the set of other instances you take action against and we have developed a common understanding of the situation, you now make such public accusations. That is really very hard to swallow.@Alonealastalovedalongthe @galdor

@louis @emacsen @boo_ @galdor @Alonealastalovedalongthe Adding my two cents, I'll keep it short as possible.1. It's a simple attempt to silence criticism of Israel, implied or direct. @louis approached me, explained the complaints and made suggestions. I offered to move my academic toots to another instance, so to avoid this type of retaliation against emacs.ch. Louis was kind enough to explain that as long as I follow the rules of emacs.ch, he will not restrict free speech of its members.2. I'm not personally interested in Babaka. The first time I responded was to Baruch Katz, who tooted a very well known Islamophobic trope by the Jewish right. I referred to, and later linked to, prof. Dan Michman (Yad Vashem) refuting these claim.3. The second contact was one by one of the mods (Serge), who replied to one of my toots about prof Avi Shlaim, demanding I should not use the term Arab Jews. I can't even begin to describe how offensive it is to tell people how to identify.4. 3rd contact was with a guy who repeated the same Islamophobic tropes the 1st one did. He conducted a lengthy back and forth, insulting me and doubting me being Jewish, and then deleted everything and blocked me.5. I approached raf, the main mod, warning his instance is spreading Islamophobic content, while giving an example of the last case (see previous point). This, apparently, brought us to this point.6. Finally, militant American right-wing activism of these type is not at all unfamiliar to me. I edit the Hebrew Wikipedia, and I know the tactics. It's purely strategical. Raf's request of Louis to take responsibility to my toots anywhere on the Fediverse is probably a good clue that this is an attempt to weaponize a mastodon (via the blocking threat and defamation) instance for political purposes. If anyone is insulted by Academic output about Israel's history, they might want to find a different way to resolve their cognitive dissonance.
