just realised i can't fix the problem of getting a Certbot certificate for a home-hosted server by making the certificate on another server first. the certificate has to be renewed at some point too. it looks like i'm going to have to move my CalDAV server to a cloud VM.

@lore If you want to get fancy you could setup your own CA to issue the certificates. I use step-ca to issue certificates with ACME on all my internal services.https://github.com/smallstep/certificates

@augustine oh, this post is outdated now, because i just put it on a cloud server. the problem now is that the CalDAV server has a bug that hasn't been patched for 5 years. :angy:

@augustine it even has a pull request that everyone agrees looks fine. not being merged. i picked this CalDAV server because people recommended it. unfortunately, it chokes on recurring calendar events made from iOS. the fix is simple. i don't understand why the pull request hasn't been merged.

@augustine more specifically, it actually accepts the events that the iOS Calendar app makes. what it doesn't accept is when i try to edit them in Evolution and save them back again...

@augustine it kind of feels like the Fediverse because everything appears to be working at first, because it's all using the same protocol, but then you run into compatibility issues

@lore That is frustrating. I haven't used CalDAV in so many years I can't remember what I used to use. I would run into syncing issues like you describe at times. I eventually switched to iCloud calendars once all my Android devices were gone.

@augustine the last Mac that could run a recent macOS version recently died on me. although i could technically afford a second-hand Mac Mini M1 this month, on the longer term, Apple's devices aren't really a fit for my tax bracket anymore, since i quit the IT industry.

@lore I think it might have been Radicale I was using so many years ago so it is discouraging sync issues still happen. I completely understand not wanting to run Nextcloud when all you need is calendars.
