I've been thinking about why I feel so strongly about not being on Twitter, since I recently saw that some of my friends who took a break are going back.I mean, I'm on Facebook and Instagram. It's not like I'm pure.I think the red line for me is the owner very actively promoting things I believe are real and urgent threats. From elevating Russian misinformation to the attack this weekend on a vaccine scientist — I don't want to support that in any way.

I don't want to call anyone out because I don't believe fighting among ourselves is the answer. But I may boost more articles about what is going on at Twitter because I have to believe my friends don't know what is going on — because it's too hard to believe they don't care.

@grammargirl I’m 100% with you in this. I’m pretty pragmatic about the realities of living in the digital age. I didn’t like Jack, but I stayed at Twitter. But I have a very specific enmity for Elon Musk—whose every value I profoundly loathe—and I could never contribute, even in any infinitesimal way, to supporting his vile ethos.

@grammargirl I've made an active choice to restrict myself from using twitter, all because of Elon. He's disabled what few protections there were, and riled up his mob by actively promoting nonsense. I'm disgusted by what he has done to the platform.

@grammargirl Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we use twitter and never click on an ad and didn't pay the $8 for a blue check, is he still making money from me?

@grammargirl I think a lot of people know and maybe care a little, but they don't care enough. Or they can compartmentalize their Twitter experience and feel that it's somehow separate from the bad stuff, thus avoiding the sense of complicity that might motivate them to leave

@grammargirl You're much more of an optimist than I. I (pessimistically) expected that a lot of people would remain--mostly for the addictive metrics (followers! impressions!). But, even I was disappointed to see just how many ended up remaining. For me, shutting down my bird account was a fantastic decision. Zero regrets.Side-note: while I liked you & your work before (found you on your website long before Twitter) ... I like you even more now. Principles are good.

@DrBonesMD To me, it's not just about whether they are making money from my activities. If someone like me with a large account posts, or if an organization hosts an event, or if journalists get sources there, we're contributing to creating a vibrant community that encourages others to spend time there, which gives the owner more influence and power, and gives the purveyors of misinformation a bigger, easily accessible audience.

@grammargirl Take a look at Facebook and Myanmar and see how you feel about continuing to use their products.Spoiler: Meta’s owner very actively promoted things that were real and urgent threats. People died. A lot of people died.

@VirginiaMurr Thanks so much. I used to feel guilty that I wasn't as vocal as so many people on Twitter — I'm terrible at conflict — but my admiration of their "bravery" was shattered when they all just stayed.

@SergKoren I do understand people whose livelihoods are closely tied to Twitter not immediately leaving. Not everyone has the privilege to walk away from an account like I did. But I had hoped more would work hard to develop other platforms and slowly leave.

@SergKoren I also kind of understand people with small accounts and curated lists who don't see any of the bad things. I do think it's possible they don't know and/or don't believe their activity matters (which is why I hope that my posting info may make a difference in those cases).

@grammargirl Not going back here. I have lost touch with good (online) friends, but it has to be the price I pay. I find the whole Musk thing deeply disturbing and worrying and I'm surprised how many others are content to stay. My mental health is a bit better too...!

@grammargirl I feel like you're underestimating the apathy of your friends and people in general. It's no wonder evil has such an easy time with their intentions, when so many people are indifferent towards it. Next to stupidity, apathy is evil's greatest asset. It's a hard realization to contend with. Still, it's worth trying to get people to care even if the likely outcome is expected. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

@grammargirl I won't deny, sometimes I feel tempted to post there since around 90% of the people I follow didn't come over to the Fediverse. I don't feel compelled to call them out either, nor drone on about the facts you mention as I believe it will have zero impact (and their algorithm will have a role at this). But anyway, thanks for saying it here. It's good to be reminded why I'm here.

@grammargirl Unfortunately, most I know who came here but later returned are fully aware of what was happening. They simply quietly slinked back because there was (and sadly still is) vastly more happening there, and not enough people they needed to hear from and talk to had moved with them, and many probably couldn't bear the sudden isolation.I have to admit that I know exactly what they're feeling and often feel drawn back. I resist only because I constantly remind myself what he's doing.

@grammargirl @SergKoren I logged into my twitter account on ‘indictment day’ because it still is a really good place to get solid analysis on news like that from people that actually know what they are talking about and not enough of those voices are over here. After falling back into reading the crazy pants replies and almost participating in the shitshow again, I logged out. Now I’m debating if I want to start from scratch & really curate a list of ‘good accounts’.

@grammargirl Is it possible that they didn't simply stay, but just left their accounts as is and aren't visiting or using them as much anymore? I only ask because that's essentially what I've done. I basically just check Twitter every once & awhile to see how the dumpster fire is going. I may RT a few things, but I don't really post much anymore.

@grammargirl I agree with you. Also, whenever I find myself reading a thread on Twitter, it is filled with homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, misogyny, vaccine misinformation, climate misinformation, and other unpleasant garbage spouted by people who are proud to be jerks. For me, it’s like going back to 1995 and being locked in a room with the worst people in my high school. No thanks.

@grammargirl I don't regret deactivating my account there in any degree. I had considered simply leaving it, but that didn't feel right. And while I'm not on FB and haven't been for years, I am on IG. So I get the "not entirely clean" feeling, too.
