Next time we hire, one of the requirements I'm adding will be ability to write readable and working shell scripts. And scripting overall.Because if the only language your can write is Haskell/OCaml/C#/Java/C/C++/other-real-true-programming language, YOU FUCKING SUCK AS A DEVELOPER. Seriously, if over the course of your career (not talking about programming noobs here) you have managed to only master just one language, YOU ARE A USELESS PIECE OF SHIT AND MUST NOT BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE NEAR COMPUTERS.

@icon_of_computational_sin I'd add on top of that VCS basic use (commit, cherry-pick, push, merge and rebase) and also code tooling setup (lint, static analysis, unit tests, etc…)

@Matthieu @icon_of_computational_sin this is a given. However, you wouldn't believe how many people can't write a simple bash script but instead produce bloated abominations in the face of God.

Probably the greatest example of this was when I managed to replace a 120k LoC C++ project with a 200 lines of bash. Not even kidding here. This also caused a huge drama in that company, due to the amount of wasted over the years effort and the sheer mismanagement and misallocation of resources.

@newt @Matthieu @icon_of_computational_sin this thread is why every entry level position is now "mastered 20 languages with 10 years of experience"

@RustyCrab @Matthieu no, it is not. Nobody is talking about an entry-level position here. However, even for noobs, I would expect at least some scripting skills. It's not that hard and takes maybe a few days of learning at most.

@icon_of_computational_sin Another way to view this is as a proxy for general interest in technology. If they went to school to get a job, they do not have passion for the technology and (most importantly) its application, no matter what fawning stuff they say in their resume.
