The #AntiMetaFediPact in a nutshell:- Fediverse users: We want to reinvent social networks- Meta: OK, let’s try it- Fediverse users: STAY AWAY FROM USThis pact is another instance of the performative activism that is currently hindering Mastodon and the Fediverse to have any shot at replacing legacy social mediaThis is the same performative activism that fuels the Fedipolice, and lead some "progressive" people to tell Black folks, LGBTQ folks and disabled folks to "go back to Twitter"

"Mastodon is welcoming minority folks, providing they use Mastodon in the exact same way as me"This is an extremely abusive stance, and it rightfully push interested people away from Mastodon"But the goal isn’t mass adoption"So what’s the goal, exactly? To create a walled garden where the entry barrier is ideological purity? Because this is exactly where the Fediverse is heading to.

@osc > So what’s the goal, exactly? To create a walled garden where the entry barrier is ideological purity?Yes you dummie. If these people weren't too toxic to tollerate, I would not be forced to run to this asshole of an internet.

Refusing to aim for mass adoption is the exact same thing as fighting an ideological fight with refusing to aim for mass adoption of your ideasIf you *really* want to change the world, you *need* some form of mass adoptionBy explicitly refusing to do so, the people who signed this pact are condemning the Fediverse to stay a niche network of apps that will not change much in society

Imagine what the past two US presidential elections would have been if instead of Twitter, we had a decentralized alternative at the center of the media stage, with far right instances being isolated from the rest of the networkIt would have changed a lot of thingsThis is this kind of future that this closed minded pact is preventing to happenOn top of being self-defeating, it’s also selfish and overall sad

Last but not least, admins blocking this instance are taking an extremely user hostile stanceBlocking Nazi instances *protect users*. What kind of protection blocking Threads is supposed to achieve? This decision should be left at the user’s discretion, not imposed to them

One more thing: blocking Threads is a catastrophic signal sent to content creators, that they’re not welcome on the Fediverse"Do you want to reach a lot of people on the Fediverse? You could, but we won’t allow that to happen"People have a very misguided view of what’s a content creator exactly. They’re not just the fancy influencers you see on Instagram. They’re also your science writers, your book vloggers, and so on.These people will not come, and will not enrich, the Fediverse

@osc nobody on mastodon is interested in re-creating the wheel of corporate big data social media.the people on mastodon want the internet back pre alphabet co, pre surveillance capitolism, and pre "you are the product."that's why mastodon and similar, exist.nobody wants meta's money, twitters money, influence from in-Q-Tel, or anything to do with any of that.bear that in mind.

@verita84 @osc if you look at the way the fediverse works, and how a server pulls in posts from people others follow, and then those posts become part of the server load, that's about what verita meant. on the rough.fediverse servers are not just singular things that interact, they are also aggregators, if that helps in understanding, it's the cornerstone of how the distributed aspect of the thing works, in part.

@osc @verita84 precisely this.meta-levels are fields and fields of data centers.if they want to run the software, there's nothing stopping them, it's GPL or which ever license it is, after all.but when an in-q-tel company leverages a decision tree like this, it's typically to feed data to their shadowy overlords, and actually has nothing to do with 'giving the users' something new to use. that's just the ruse employed. meta doesn't care about anybody. they really don't. I'm surprised more people don't see it.Neither does twitter. there are high ranking fbi and cia folks on the board at twitter, and meta has offices near the capitol building, and so forth. the connections are myriad and not so subtle.they're both intelligence gathering platforms, where the user is the product.dossier collection? we get them to do that themselves, these days. we call it facebook, twitter, and instagram.and they *love* it.fedi is a brush back against that, and the folks here although most of them are decidedly VERY weird, are largely hip to this, (minus in largess the new twitter folks,) and want nothing to do with it.
