It's childish contrarianism to want to outright reject Meta adopting activitypub. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about what this means and how to handle it but if you want this technology to matter in the slightest, it needs widespread adoption. Otherwise it's just a toy for the terminally online, technological masturbation, software solipsism.Maybe you want the tech you use to be a toy forever, but I don't. I want these things to become standard, boring, in the background. You don't get there by rejecting every attempt at commercialization.

The world where the tech-literate use one set of technologies and the "unwashed masses" use whatever mass-produced proprietary thing is being shipped by megacorps breeds elitism and contempt.

@digifox Yeah but with this, the actually good thing that people use to escape from their evil megacorp overlords just becomes yet another thing the evil megacorps are using to control and oppress them. You are literally arguing that people who want to be free should not be allowed to be free because the majority either do not want to, or do not have the means to, be free. The correct solution is the exact opposite - to root out the evil megacorps entirely and free the masses, not to let the evil megacorps invest every corner they have not already seized control over.

@galenaYou're assuming that's it's a foregone conclusion that Meta shapes the fediverse and not the other way around.

@digifox Everything the corp does is evil, so short of them being forcibly dissolved, there is no solution. As a single individual I am powerless to resist an evil multinational mega corporation backed by all of the most powerful governments on the planet, and this person's take is more or less just an admission of that same powerlessness.I oppose everything they do, because they are evil, and that evil taints everything they touch. I do not want them to succeed in any of their endeavors, nor do I believe fedi, or anything else they bring to the masses, will have any value once it is tainted by them. Fedi is a means to an end, not an end itself - the goal is, for many of us, reducing corporate tyranny. If literally every single human being on the planet was using fedi, but it was being used as a tool of corporate tyranny, that would be a worse outcome than about 200 people using it and it being something that helps avoid corporate tyranny. Your end is simply for it to be used by everyone, regardless of whether it's being used for good or evil; mine is for it to be used for good, regardless of whether it's used by everyone. Our ideologies and goals are simply incompatible.

@galenaSo yes. Technological solipsism, as I said. The point of software and technology is to improve people's lives and enable them to do things they could not do before. If only 200 people are using it, it's an abject failure. You're an ideologue, not someone interested in improving lives.

@digifox Any serious method of improving the lives of the majority is illegal, unfortunately
