I'm not sure if I buy the whole #meta #facebook killed #xmpp. I've seen several services, with large user bases, using xmpp, or some abstraction of the same protocol. I don't think the concerns are invalid, I just think there's a bit more to it.

@aboxofsox And yet, none of those services can work with the others.Who cares that’s xmpp if you can’t use the server of your choice, to connect with the client of your choice to speak to any other user of xmpp ? It could be any protocol that wouldn’t be different.

Federation is an XMPP *feature* not a _requirement_ for it to be a successful protocol that allows building services that make peoples' lives better (or corporations tons of money). This is really no different than the XEPs not all being implemented everywhere.XMPP is insanely successful, just not in the way that makes you happiest.

@aboxofsox To be fair most of these apps use #XMPP but don't let you connect to other #XMPP servers

@realcaseyrollins right, that's a grievance I find perfectly reasonable. But is it justifiable to say "X killed XMPP"? Maybe. I guess it depends on who you ask. We're kind of seeing that unfold in real time, right now.

@aboxofsox From what I hear #Google specifically decreased #XMPP usage because so many people switched to their client. But other than that I doubt it

@realcaseyrollins makes sense. Would you consider that an effort to extinguish in the context of EEE?

@aboxofsox Yep, as far as I know that fits the model

@aboxofsoxWhen I've recently seen people say something like "X killed #XMPP", it seems as if they were not talking about the protocol itself (which, as your screenshot from the XMPP Standards Foundation website shows, is quite thriving). What they mean is that it they drained users from the federated network into their walled gardens and then closed off federation themselves (gtalk did that, whatsapp never federated in the first place afaik). It is important to remember that those corporations only do things which are profitable. Opening federation is not profitable on its own.@realcaseyrollins

@jssfr @aboxofsox > Opening federation is not profitable on its own.I think it actually is, especially if you separate the software from the frontend/clients.I expect #Meta to use ad injection to monetize #Fediverse content; and assuming that the rumors that #Instagram is dying is true, in order to make money, #Meta doesn't even need to keep people on their platform, nor do they need to actually host any content; they just need to let anyone with a #Fediverse account login and viola, new revenue stream from a new user.

@realcaseyrollins @jssfr that seems plausible. It's hard to say how cohesive the Fediverse will be if/when #meta joins the Fediverse. They might be met with enough rejection to make it a less cost effective source of ad revenue. Which I think is very likely given the intense energy around the whole thing here.
