I like… want tumblr to implement activitypub. No clue how they’d do that, or if it would be awful but there have been mutterings for a while. Idk I don’t think that’s bizarre. Facebook fucking with it at all is an obvious and inevitable nightmare notwithstanding it’s impending collapse, though, and any argument against that being an obvious nightmare smells distinctly like dimwitted astroturfing.

@kittenlikeasmallcat didn't Tumblr say they were going to implement AP? that was months ago, haven't heard anything since.

@kittenlikeasmallcat I admit I have seen a lot of people be like "oh no, fb" and while that is a sentiment i share generally, it isn't super clear to me how this relates to activitypub implementation

@ruthan Say they adopt AP, “join fedi,” then start using their huge team to push changes, and fork it. Say they implement that and then later rewrite it, changing it based on what they learn from their own private analytics and come out with their own ‘enhanced,’ variably proprietary version of a product, locking everyone in and everyone else out. Having taken the lion’s share of users both from the existing fediverse and also bringing in their own userbase, both of whom are no longer even potentially interested or committed to the open version we’re using or any of it’s future versions, effectively killing what could have been. Of course there are going to be diehards, but that number needs to reach a critical, self conscious mass to effectively mitigate this kind of misfortune. This isn’t so much a hypothetical as it is their entire track record, and the only thing that makes sense for them to do. What I’ve just said is a broad and blurry oversimplification of barely one facet of the concerns shared by a huge number of people, and might not be what you’re talking about at all. If someone else has more to say, please do, and I strongly recommend everyone look into this phenomena.I can’t just assume you already know what this is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish
