Surely they're not *all* bad, right? #meme #fediverse #project92 #meta

@Natanox There's actually no way for #Meta to cause the #Fediverse to "fall apart" except for great strain with a flood of incoming traffic

@realcaseyrollins Meta embraced it years ago, leading to the hopes of many that XMPP will become the new de-facto standard for instant messaging. It wasn't, they siphoned a huge user base off of other servers / prevented migration, then silently broke support to change things to their liking. XMPP never really recovered from this. It was an embrace-extend-extinguish approach that fully worked, capturing all of someone else's momentum while also using it as great excuse in their own marketing.

@Natanox I highly doubt the same end result will happen here, but rather, the scientific law of osmosis applies here; the bigger platform loses users and the bigger platform gains users.#Gab is a great example of this, they joined the #Fediverse when they had 1 million users and the #Fediverse had 3, and lost so many users (including myself!) that many of them formed #Fediverse instances that went on to become the biggest instances on the #Pleroma side of the #Fediverse. I mean, how many people on the #Fediverse do you really think will join a platform run by #Meta? I would think there would be much excitement about the opportunity to convince millions of #Meta users to join a #FOSS platform.

@realcaseyrollins @Natanox I'm with Casey on this one. I struggle to imagine the person who goes "Oh boy, Facebook-Fedi!" and then jumps over to Facebook instead. The whole scenario that people keep proposing requires them being able to siphon users, and I'm not seeing a single person saying "I will be that user who gets siphoned, I can't wait to be back on Facebook!"I see a great opportunity for the opposite to happen, however.

@Natanox i really don't even get any argument FOR the federation with Meta.A decentralized network is there to be DECENTRALIZED and not get one big fat super-company to make out 99% of all users. That shit sucks. And the company being meta makes it even worse.

@aZa1905 @Natanox The lopsided nature of potential federation of #Meta's #Barcelona / #Project92 / #Threads platform is probably the most legitimate concern IMHO, especially since it will likely cause strain for smaller instances

@realcaseyrollins @aZa1905 @Natanox "i really don't even get any argument FOR the federation with Meta."breaking the lock-in effect. users might migrate to a free and open mastodon instance if they can reach "meta-friends&family" through federation.
