thinking about the spell "stone to flesh" in D&Dnormally it's for reversing the effects of a flesh to stone spell, but nowhere in the spell description does it state that's its only use...

@ghost_bird you seem to be correct as well, the version I'm most familiar with (the 3.5 version) doesn't specify that it's useful for cutting through walls, but the AD&D book does specify that it can bore tunnels. wild!

@ghost_bird it seems they actually removed it entirely in 5e, in favor of just having a flesh to stone spell and the reverse of that being Greater Restoration (or wish)

@wizard petrify, stone to mud, remodeling, mud to stone, stone to flesh has been a staple of creative spell usage since before I was old enough to play RPGs

@wizard I remember once reading an incredible post on the (long gone, sadly) WotC forums where someone wrote an in-universe guide to using "Stone to Flesh" for gourmands. It included discussions of what properties of stone result in what changes to flavor, texture, toughness, suitability for culinary styles, and so on.There was ample consideration of "marbling," of course.I wish I'd saved it.

@epw i bet you can get a king's ransom for casting flesh to stone on a bunch of wagyu beef to preserve it and then stone to fleshing it back, although i'm sure there are better ways for a wizard of that caliber to make money. still, it's probably a really great way of preserving fresh meat.i never considered actually eating any of that lmao, that's great

@shibao considering the handbook only specifies it can turn a 3x3ft cylinder into flesh, this must have been the life work of some devoted and crazy sorcerer, or a very strange cabal of them.

@wizard oh wow, I never even considered preservation, that's great.I don't play much D&D anymore, but when I'm writing in similar worlds, I often like the idea that there are "non-adventurer" ways to master a single spell or two, over a period of years. This way I can justify the occasional weird magical business or special ritual based on a fun spell interaction without needing to consider the high-level wizard behind it.This would be a great case for it. Maybe a Stone Chef's Guild

@epw a global network of Stone Chefs, who transport (or pay for transport of) exotic meats across continents. You can either transport the single chef to a far away place or have one at either end of the supply line to make the food edible.the best part is that it's not going to be a high target for thieves, since if they rob a ship carrying a ton of exotic fish stone, there are so few people in the world who can turn it into something useful.

@ghost_bird @epw a thousand years in the future, long after the Stone Chefs Guild has disbanded and only legends of them exist, you find a pile of perfectly preserved fossils of rare / ancient / magical creatures. Next to them is a stone tablet detailing all sorts of otherworldly recipes and the effects they have when ingested. The only problem is figuring out how to prepare a stone mammoth leg...
