Our entire information ecosystem is toast.

@brooklynmarie I’ve been thinking about entirely withdrawing from social media, but there really aren’t any better places to stay informed about anything important happening in the world either. It’s all a slurry of spaghettified magical thinking and canalized memetic brainworms, in every direction.

@seachanger @vortex_egg Oh! I was specifically talking about how dipshit billionaires have been allowed to basically use our info systems as social control but @vortex_egg might have been talking about something else. There's plenty to choose from but it's all bad :(

@brooklynmarie @vortex_egg gotcha. as a co-owner of a brand new place-based server here I’m feeling empowered and excited about socials for the first time maybe ever and I am stubbornly keeping those vibes as long as I can

@brooklynmarie @vortex_egg honestly thousands of new 50-500 person mastodon servers would move us toward resiliency of essential comms in the face of a lot of doom

@vortex_egg @seachanger Oh yeah neither was I. I truly believe in the power of the fediverse to change our discourse for the better. I'm more concerned right now about our journalism, our libraries and books, our classrooms, our ability to track down peer-reviewed info on line, etc. It just all feels so fragile right now, as we tremble on the precipice of a very different world

@vortex_egg @seachanger Mastodon could have the power to pull us out of this and I had such hopes for Bluesky which are now fizzling into "well at least I can shitpost there." But I missed whatever the hell's going on with Meta and the fediverse today, only seeing reference to it

@brooklynmarie @seachanger Yeah Bluesky is a shitposting hangout zone as of right now. I haven’t seen anything there (or here, or anyone else) that replicates the global information hub that Twitter was at its best.

@vortex_egg @brooklynmarie tho even twitter at its best had some very, very serious flaws and was training many people to be in the habit of posting for clout instead of organizing irl. the fediverse is changing quickly and it’s good to pay attention and be involved, we may see it fork in directions that set us up for different but more resilient global communication networks that our communities and organizations have more control over

@seachanger @vortex_egg @brooklynmarie And all of these are flaws in humanity. Put a thousand people together, and you're going to have the same noble principles and selfish behaviors and misunderstandings becoming propaganda. It's not the tech, it's the people, but at least we've been working with systems for dealing with this among people forever. Tech needs to allow itself to be informed by history, sociology, political science, literature, and the history of law.
