Remember the times when Linux Foundation actually concerned itself with making Linux a good OS kernel? Instead of creating vaccine passports, fighting climate change, and pushing for "diversity through code" whatever the fuck that means. Good times!According to the foundation's latest annual report [1], they spent ~1.5x more money on Blockchain than on Linux Kernel. Instead...>For 2023, we will continue to focus on impact, diversity, and moving the needle on solving big, complex problems, such as climate change, software security, and food security, to push the envelope of technology.Linux? What Linux?[1]: https://project.linuxfoundation.org/hubfs/LF%20Research/2022%20Linux%20Foundation%20Annual%20Report.pdf?hsLang=en

By the way, I genuinely enjoy that every single PDF from The L'Eunuchs Foundation is made on Mac in Adobe software. Nothing screams QUALITY SOFTWARE as loud as your own employees refusing to use it.

@splitshockvirus read the report, ssv-fren! They had only spent 2.2% of their budget on L'Eunuchs in 2022, despite the name suggesting somewhat otherwise.

@icon_of_computational_sin I love how the page about "Linux Foundation Board of Directors" puts someone from VMware in the first place, then Sony. VMware violated the GPL before and Sony is that company that suggested creating Toybox, a GPL-free BusyBox alternative.

@icon_of_computational_sin @splitshockvirus Everyone cheats on their resume a little. I'm pretty sure that having relevant experience in DevOps is something other than cracking jokes about how YAML sucks on Fedi. But it's still close, right? :marseywink:

@splitshockvirus sorry, my bad. It's actually 3.2% of their budget and 2.2% of their... I don't know what exactly. These reports are hard to make sense of due to all PR bullshit lingo.

@icon_of_computational_sin Yes but they are putting 23% into "Cloud, Containers, & Virtualization" which is basically my industry. I'd prefer them spending money to develop KVM and Xen to the point were we can seemless multiple GPU accelerated computers. What exactly would the kernel benefit from if 3.2% budget was 5.0% or 50%?

Mining equipment is specialized hardware. ASICs, FPGAs, GPUs and CPUs are all used to break blocks for a modest reward. These devices also consume a lot of energy when in use. Volume of a mining pool provides better overall reward, but these gains are small in comparison to the collective costs. The value of a crypto coin is going to be determined by its given liquidity. BTC has the most liquidity - meaning anyone, anywhere knows what it is and has some method for accepting it. Lesser known coins have less liquidity therefore they are lower in value. However this principle doesn't apply to meme coins like doge which is really only directly valued based on its current relevance in the meme marketplace.

@splitshockvirus well, for one, they could've make it less shit. My fren works for a large storage vendor (won't disclose the name, but you probably heard of them) and often tells me how utterly disgustingly awful the code in L'Eunuchs is. The storage system is just a bunch of ugly hacks, most of it isn't even maintained properly. Many vendors have to carry their own iSCSI implementation with their drivers, because the one shipped in L'Eunuchs is just a useless piece of shit. And adding a decent one is a futile task, because... removing the old one will probably break something for someone and having two iSCSI protocol stacks is a stupid idea in itself.Other subsystems don't have it better. Proper PCIe hotplug support had been existing as a set of patches for several years. The kernel doodz didn't accept it because it affected almost the entire PCIe stack and there is no way for them to thoroughly test it. Imagine if the kernel update breaks PCIe for say 20% of devices. Quite a nice prospect, isn't it?Here we come to the idea that L'Eunuchs would've been a lot easier to develop and maintain if it was a microkernel, because you could just swap your iSCSI or your PCIe stack mid-flight without even rebooting the computer. But Lewwwwnoooos "I'M THE SMARTEST PENGUIN HERE" Torovaltos supposedly won that debate against Andy Tanenbaum (despite showing himself as a complete asshat) and almost 30 years kater L'Eunuchs people still become enraged when they see "micro" and "kernel" written together. What an utter disgrace!

@icon_of_computational_sin Frankly, I think the vast majority of "Foundations" are solutions in search of a problem (often becoming one in the process).

@lpwaterhouse ah welp... The L'Eunuchs Foundations isn't that. Instead, it's a joint fund by several dozen large corpos used to funnel money into whatever projects they want, while also writing this money off as charity donations and thus paying less in taxes. Not having to deal with employment overhead is also a nice bonus.

@waotzi which one?FreeBSD bleeds developers left and right, because FreeBSD Foundation spends money on hiring diversity consultants (https://reddit.baby/r/freebsd/comments/7zk3z6/benno_rice_says_a_diversity_consultant_will_be/) who barf up Codes of Conduct prohibiting virtual hugs (https://www.theregister.com/2018/02/21/freebsd_code_of_conduct_controversy/), while the dude implementing AWS support asks for donations on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/cperciva).NetBSD is mostly dead, as far as I know.OpenBSD is doing good, but the support for hardware or filesystems (or other things) is abysmal. Still, might be the better option, if all you need is to run Emacs somewhere.

@icon_of_computational_sin Normally I would say lol get fucked nerd, not my problem, fix your own shit. But this is just niche enough that it kind of resonates with me, and it's not desktop shit. So I'll just say fair enough, because I run into that type of shit at work except with old versions of the kernel and weird network irregularities given a certain magical number got hit I have no opinion on micro kernel verses monolithic. But I'll take your word that micro would have been better. I don't see why you couldn't just swap out what components you need, compile the kernel and just have that as your company kernel, but I'll assume there is too much technical dept at the company to do so. "Ugly hacks" reminds me a lot of work

@splitshockvirus haha it's not my shit to fix. It's L'Eunuchs shit. If you use it, you too are affected in one way or the other.Do you want to know what is the most common application for PCIe hotplug? Thunderbolt! If you want to use eGPUs with your laptop, you definitely need this. Same goes for other features. L'Eunuchs seems to be developed first and foremost as a kernel for a few huge cloud and embedded vendors these days, with everything else being secondary.Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if 10 years in the future many of them become fed up with this clusterfuck of an OS and just throw in a new one, designed from scratch. Perchance even compatible with L'Eunuchs to some extent in terms of userspace APIs and driver interfaces. From what I can already tell, kernel development is becoming more and more expensive each year due to what is mostly legacy and organisational problems, so it is only a matter of time.

@icon_of_computational_sin If you want to use eGPUs with your laptop, you definitely need this.I don't, eGPU has always seemed like a meme to me. I have seen what performance looks like on Windows and it's wasn't what you would get with standard PCIe and it has always looked like a gimmick for gaming companies to sell GPU enclosures, and never a realistic technology.Thunderbolt is also an intel technology and requires royalties most motherboard manufacturers specifically AMD leave it out.Same goes for other features. L'Eunuchs seems to be developed first and foremost as a kernel for a few huge cloud and embedded vendors these days, with everything else being secondary. That is correct, the largest companies on the foundation are Google, AWS, Microsoft, VMware all of whom contribute financially as well as with patches and drivers for their various cloud platforms, because they have a vested interest in having the Kernel run the best on their hypervisors.
