@Neigh-Sayer @justnormalkorean I really avoided romance stories for years. I stuck with action anime the entire time, but something just happened after a friend of mine bet me money to give Toradora a try. A switch flipped, and I didnt ever go back to action again.

@Darmy67 @Zealist @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean You don't need a garden for herbs, just a bunch of pots that you're willing to put around the place and on window sills. They don't like the outdoors when its frosty anyway.

@Neigh-Sayer @Darmy67 @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean but yea, i'll do several herbs next year, the garden altogether was something i wanted to do since jan, talked to my grampa about it but he didn't want me to till up a spot, so i bought a raised planter and started putting shit in his flower beds around his yard that have died since he hasn't been able to get out and take care of them since several years now, and he is so impressed that he said "next spring i'll let oyu till one", but i decided i was gonna buy more raised beds and just put them out back next year cuz i really like raised beds rahter than tilling, tho i might till a spot for abuncha sweet corn, so i can sell it and give it away to friends and family.

@BowsacNoodle @Neigh-Sayer @Darmy67 @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @thatguyoverthere i gto some corn in a hydroponic setup to sprout, i plan to transfer them, hydroponics supposedly makes it grow faster, so i was hoping maybe i could get them to catch up and finish before hte season ends, if i could just get a few ears i'd be happy, next year i'll do way more than i need, and sell some, people around here love sweet corn and they'll buy fresh ears off you.

@KennyWhitePowers @greyfox46 @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @justnormalkorean this is 100% true, and i was thinking about why, and my only conclusion i could come to was that commercial growing operations tend to harvest all their crops early and let them ripen in transit or gas them to ripen them, where as you the home gardener, tends to watch your crops and only pull them when they're properly ripe.

@KennyWhitePowers @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean yea long as you're starting with heirlooms you can seed save, and i plan to do a bit more research next year, this year is basicly a trial run, as as it's gone on i've expanded what i'm growing more and more, to the point that i'm totally enamored with gardening, and i am autistic so the idea of saving seeds and propagating is really cool to me.

@thatguyoverthere @Zealist Well you know the only way to get soil health? Is to do things the right way. It takes years and years to build organic matter. Using fertilizer carefully and monitoring the soil. Fertilizer adds organic matter. That said? I’ve spent a very long time with soil and plants. Two decades of experience tells me?Nothing gonna stop the ultimate enemy, you can’t stop physics or nature. Condensation gonna downy mildew your ass or mites. God the army worms, the fucking snails and slugs. It’s on and on to fungus. Zero reliability. Identify the problems. Resolve them, use chemicals or don’t. If you use Chemicals read the labels. Follow the labels. No roundup doesn’t kill earthworms or any of that, in fact in my experiments it did nothing but enhance the soil. There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Fertilizer themself? I spent a lot of time doing organic methods however? Without absolute measurements you cannot have absolute results. That means you put mystery down. That’s not good, I’ve seen more overloaded soil from organic than inorganic. I had a 408 fruit tree farm in Hawaii in soil. It was the largest nightmare of fertilizing and then bee keeping to keep the pollination going. Never ending work. Now what’s really fun? I dunno where any of you live. But I doubt it’s kula Maui. I don’t live there anymore. That means well that unique climate isn’t available. 6 years ago I started the project. I achieved 6 months interval without intervention on plants. Automatically running and maintaining climate. Fully indoors and under lights. I have not grown anything since 19, however that does not mean I’m not advancing the tech. I already know it works so it’s just make it better. The results are clear. If you grow in a controlled environment fully hydroponic? There is little concern of problems. Fully synthetic fertilizers, if you don’t use them? Your plants won’t develop the chlorophyll in the tips. They grow so fast organic nutrients are not enough, the bioavailability is too low. When you dig into it? You can double a plants size every 3 days. 128lbs of food per square foot annually. The design, is based in physics and chemistry, the entire system is a giant math ball. It’s not guessing it’s exact. That’s what is missing in plants that till I did this was impossible. Reproducible results. Anyway plants are bad ass keep playing it’s always nice to work with them. Best advice I can give? They are a lot tougher than we all give them credit for.

@charliebrownau @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @thatguyoverthere Factually incorrect. Christianity was invented cirica 30 AD after Christ began His earthly ministry. During his ministry he rebuked the jews and their lies harshly. They coped and seethed, killed the messiah, only for Him (being the Son of God) to rise again and destroy the old covenant.Secondarily, white power structures pre 1750 where Christian power structures, based on sphere doctrine. Sphere doctrine is inherently anti-jewish because it prioritizes real family structures and the community over the state. It wasn't until jews came in and tricked us into believing that separation of church in state means that the church sits in the corner with a limp phallus while the communists run rough-shod over the family that we ended up where we are. Most modern day protestant denominations are jewish subversions. Again that's why they seethe when someone reminds them that Martin Luther wrote an entire treatise on jewish subversion and we just ignored it.

@SlicerDicer @Zealist Yeah when I moved here most of the ground was hard, compacted clay. I've been running chickens for almost a decade at this point and building up the soil as I go. This year is the first year where things are really starting to pop, but as you say we do still have a few issues to contend with (mildew in a few areas, lantern flies from Asia, etc). Most of what I've planted over the past several years has been perennials. I don't have 400 fruit trees, but I have a few that are really taking off. I also have several places where I have raspberry and blackberry coming in really strong, and I've allowed some volunteer mulberry to pop up that basically require nothing but harvesting and pruning from me. Last year I started working more on annuals, but we didn't have a ton of luck. From the way things look right now we should be seeing a pretty excellent harvest from the potatoes if nothing else. I tried them once before but they died long before they could reach the size the plants I have now are.I don't really get into chemicals, but if you are doing hydro/aero it might make some sense. I think it's very hard to be precise on soil, and it is very easy to add too much liquid fertilizer which can then run off and cause problems elsewhere. I use a lot of compost, and I make compost tea which I feed to the trees and bushes. I do avoid most chemicals, but I imagine there is a time in place for some. Round up may not kill larger bugs and stuff, but it does kill microbial life. My concern is primarily that in spite of it being called safe for human consumption, it can have a negative impact on gut health. One thing I have been working on is adding things to the soil seed bank that I want to see growing instead of less appealing weeds. Aside from poison ivy, my most prolific "weed" so far this year is impatiens. For the past 5 it's been amaranth (edible grains).Anyway, like you say plants are bad ass. The problems we have are learning opportunities, and I'm always happy to learn new things.

@Zealist @SlicerDicer Chickens help so much. I use them to speed up/enhance my compost. They love to search through a pile looking for bugs and sprouts, and while they are at it they shred a lot of stuff up with their scratching. The pooping also helps keep the nitrogen levels higher which keeps the pile hot. I also get a little workout myself once they've more or less flattened it out and I pile it back up for them. You can use the stuff after they are done with it right away on some things, but I like to let it sit a little longer just to finish off any potential seed they might have added to it with their poo and let it cook down a little bit more.

@Zealist @thatguyoverthere @ShockTohp @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean look into growing cuttings, you don't need to worry about hybrids and once you learn about different types of cuttings, you can just walk around wherever you are gathering cuttings of different things to root. turnaround time is lower than trying to grow stuff like fruit trees, and you can get started with a pretty simple setup and expand from there if you like it.

@Zealist @SlicerDicer Yeah I have a few ducks too and they are great for making liquid fertilizer. I have a couple fruit trees and bushes around the yard and I move the pool around so that I can dump it on them. I have been slowly working on a pond for them over the past 2 years, and I have been using water from there to feed the trees this year.

@EssentialUtinsil @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp I cloned one of my grapes this year. I also potted a few roots from my raspberries and am working on propagating a new boysenberry into a pot. I also turned 4 strawberry plants into 10 this year, a few of which are in pots to be moved to another spot or sold off.I'd love to try and clone a redbud. They are really beautiful in the spring, and they are a legume which I'm sure could really help feed some other plants if I got it worked into my hedge or something.

The only thing is where I live after a year of exposure the plastic is a bit brittle. Needs replacing. I want to get one that is made with more substantial material at some point, and maybe a little bigger inside so I can stand all the way up and fit a few more trays.

@EssentialUtinsil @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp I have a tot to send hunting for eggs too, but I've been able to teach him that when a momma is sitting we don't bother her. This particular momma actually can't be contained (she's small and can fly) so she just leaves the pen to start a nest. She had 2 nests this year, but the first one was discovered by an escaped chicken or 2 and they were adding to her pile until there was more egg than duck. The second try she did a much better job of concealing her nest and popped out with 15 ducklings one day. We lost 2 to nature, but now she has 13 babes who are really having a good time in my crappy little pond. I think the lady who bought the others is wanting to pick them up today too.

@EssentialUtinsil @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp yeah these I bought from a nursery a few years back. I dug out a section of hedge and planted these and blueberries together only to find out 2 years later that they don't really get along. I lost 4 blueberries in that lesson. Anyway I transplanted the blueberries and both of them really took off. The blueberries are companioning with strawberries now and that mix seems to be working much better. I also have yellow raspberries, and this is the first year that they've been jumping as far from the mother which led to a much better harvest this year so far. I'm actually kind of surprised it's still fruiting to be honest.Last year I tossed a few blackberries into the hedge here too and they are pushing up some nice canes now. I also have some places around the yard where I've disposed of some of the runners from here that actually took off. I'm not really sure how many different varieties or individual berry bushes I have now actually because we also have a couple "wild" berries I tend to. I'm actually thinking about cloning one of them because it's kind of in a shitty spot and I think it would be good to get it out of where it is, but the berries are quite good and I don't want to lose them.

@BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @EssentialUtinsil @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp I consider ivy as a kind of placeholder. When I need the space for something more substantial I just rip it out and let it grow back slowly. It helps keep the soil cool so as long as it isn't killing your stuff it can be a boost.

@BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @Hyolobrika I was originally planning to build a dome, but I got the house style for christmas one year and just started using it. I have heard that domes may not get quite as steamy where most of the plants are, but I would like to try one out. One thing I thought you might be able to do is build a compost pile in the middle during the winter to help keep it a little warmer without having to pump heat in.

@EssentialUtinsil @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp I was really hoping my turkey hen was going to be successful sitting this year, but for some reason nothing under her hatched. I had an egg eater in the coop for a little bit and it's possible she messed with the eggs. I have to kick her off the nest and clean it up at this point. I did manage to hatch 2 turkeys in the incubator so at least we have thanksgiving covered. I would have liked to get some of those chickens she was sitting on. I have a hen that's gone broody (not sitting on eggs) that I might give a few eggs and see how she does. I found out the egg eater is probably blind (she has some damage to her eyes from the looks of it) so for now I have her in a separate cage until I have a few more birds to cull. She's a pretty bird. It's a shame she has chosen this path, but I get it considering finding food out in the yard may be near impossible.

@BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @EssentialUtinsil @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp yeah that's kind of how I try to look at them. I've heard them referred to as "pioneer plants" too. The invasive kind sometimes need intervention, but a lot of the time what weeds are growing can tell you a bit about the soil. Many of them help to restore crap soil and grow in places where other stuff won't or can't do well. Also nature absolutely detests bare soil and will do everything to avoid it.

@BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp this is something that various permaculture systems teach. different weeds will germinate in different conditions, and tell you about the soil. for example, sometimes taprooted weeds/thorny weeds grow where the soil is compacted, they help break up the soil, add aeration, and keep things from further compacting it.

Something else that sounds strange, but works well for tomatoes is to bury sardines about 6" under the plant. I had tomato plants last year that were almost 8ft tall and produced until december

Got that trick from a local man in his 80s. I saw his monstrous tomato plants and had to stop and ask

@EssentialUtinsil @thatguyoverthere @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp I found the comparison really interesting because all the reasons you mentioned can be metaphorically put into the perspective of looking at it as a living thing trying for homeostasis. Taproot would be like you said, where the system is too compacted for other things. Acidic or alkaline soils will enable growth of other things, as will deficiency or excess of minerals and moisture. The first responding pioneer species (generally weeds) make the soil more hospitable to other things by fixing nitrogen, normalizing pH, breaking up chat, etc. What interests me is using those pioneers as a shortcut to soil engineering. Obviously you don't want things which will outcompete your desired plants, which most c4 plants (grasses and weeds) will do, but I think there's potential for letting them grow and do their thing for a bit before pulling the weed and creating a "tea" from it for natural fertilizer. If something is good at fixing acidic soil, like dandelions, I would assume they produce reducing agents in some way -or- they pull acid from the soil. If this hasn't been done (I'm sure it has), I'd like to test this by isolating various parts of a dandelion— taproot, stems, leaves, immature (yellow), and mature flowers (white)— in distilled water. A few samples of each, as well as a few "whole dandelion" and water controls. Ultimately looking if any part of the plant appears to be an acid or alkaline sink and looking at "brewing" bunches of that to adjust soil. For example, if I found out that dandelion flowers are super acidic and in the process of creating those the plant is sucking out a ton of acid from the soil and raising soil pH, and maybe the stems are alkaline, I would look at treating acidic soil by plucking dandelion flowers from the stem up, pulling off the heads to eat or discard accordingly, brewing the stems to extract all the alkalinity, pouring the stem-tea and stem paste into the soil, and letting the tap roots stay so they could repeat the process.

@KennyWhitePowers @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean They make that ground up, liquified fish fertilizer that’s the same idea and no matter how deep the plant went that I was planting I’d come out the next day and they’d all be dug up. In fairness to raccoons it was probably skunks.

@BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere @Darmy67 @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @charliebrownau @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp it's been a while since I've been into it, but this was a huge topic in permaculture, and people that I used to follow have done a lot of research and experimentation with this. Jeff Lawton in particular was very big on working with weeds/pioneer species to condition soil, but also the need to understand your local ecosystem and find stuff that you can work with, instead of against (to your point).Another adjacent topic is how to use livestock systems to improve and restore large areas of soil, this is a sort of holy grail of permaculture since modern factory farming/livestock systems are extremely destructive to the soil and pose a huge risk to our food security since we've become so completely reliant on these methods.

@charliebrownau @BowsacNoodle @Darmy67 @EssentialUtinsil @Neigh-Sayer @Zealist @greyfox46 @justnormalkorean @ShockTohp yeah even if they don't like the plant itself, they (chickens) will likely scratch at the roots in search of bugs and can do a really good job weeding a space. Ducks also root around in mud in search of treats.Joel Salatin uses chickens to spread manure on his pastures. He follows his cows a few days behind (enough time for flies to find the manure and lay eggs). The chickens scratch the manure in search of larvae. Cow manure is like rabbit in that it can be used without having to compost it yet (chicken and pig manure can burn plants if used without breaking down first).
