Been seeing a lot of posts about #Meta and #Facebook and #instagram federating and specifically arguments that any instance that's run for profit should be blocked by default. That's absolutely nonsensical. You WANT every large company to have it's own instance where has it's own verified accounts. You WANT every news org (including for profit ones) to have their own instance. You want EVERY organization to offer a federated instance hosting official accounts. That's how the fediverse WINS

@nomi I am not totally sure what to think about. For me the problem is not really whether they make profit or not, the problem is their use of personal data, and whether our data can be retrieved and used or not. I don't have a position regarding federation or block, until now everything we know are mostly rumors.

@kjr There really isn't any personal data they gain by creating a federated product. If they want our posts and info, it's already on the open internet. If there is some additional data only available to a federated server, they could spin up a mastodon instance called "bobs-corral" and start collecting.

@nomi from the open internet you get the free text, but it is almost impossible to build enough structure to get the graph of a person and her/his interactions.

@kjr I disagree, but also it doesn't matter. For all we know meta could already have 15 or 150 instances already up running gentle bots that fly under the radar. Collecting, harvesting, compiling

@nomi it is not the same, you would need fake users to interact with the users of the fediverse. That means, you could maybe get data but not really useful data in your context.

@kjr Maybe we're talking past each other. Passively, you could collect users, followers, who liked what, who boosted what, post time stamps. What else are you considering necessary to build a graph?

@nomi graphs allows you to get detailed information about the person (what maybe at the level of individual is not very useful), and they can be clustered to define different groups of population on which you can act. In the case of Meta until now the goal was mostly marketing inside the own platform, and that makes for them necessary to have contextualized data which can be integrated with the data inside the Meta plattforms (just harvested data is not useful for their use case).
