The first 18 minutes or so seemed promising. Then they introduced a bunch of Klingons with really cheap looking makeup. Like, I've seen better cosplays. And we got to have some drawn out lackluster fight scenes capped off by torturing information out of a Klingon with a couple of punches to the face. It's jarring to see Star Trek of all things weighing in in favor of torture as just and effective.

The whole thing just smells of cutting costs and low budgets. It's not an effective season premiere and not a good entryway to #StrangeNewWorlds or #StarTrek Some day people are going to blame the writers strike for how bad it is, but the timeline doesn't track.

Also I'm just 100% not interested in a "war with the Gorn" arc.

I don't know how to explain to you that if torture is depicted as effective, it is, ipso facto, depicted as potentially morally good. All you have to do - as they have done - is set up some worse outcome, and it is morally justifiable. That's how every cop justifies beating up a witness. That's how every fascist justifies torturing prisoners. "Torture is effective" == "Torture is good."

There is no amount of "we're better than that" that can give it narrative payoff. All that does is set "badass antihero" against "naive goody two-shoes."

@q_aurelius> There is no amount of "we're better than that" that can give it narrative payoffI'm not convinced of this. I agree torture is *very* un-StarFleet and that it's immoral to write stories that suggest it works, for all the reasons you give. But I'm hoping this may be setting up a character arc where these chickens come home to roost for M'Benga, and the PTSD and drug use motivating it explored.(1/2)

@q_aureliusClever writers would slowly reveal that M'Benga's actions created far more problems for StarFleet than they appeared to solve. In other words, using the appearance of his torture working, to set up a demonstration of how badly it fails on a much larger stage. We'll see how clever the SNW season 2 writers turn out to be...(2/2)

@strypey I will concede that that is possible. I'm not optimistic about it.
