You know my own worry about meta joining the fediverse?A buncha instances forming an alliance defederating from meta... and defederating against the people that didn't defederate against meta. The fediverse gets fractured enough. Can we not break it further?

@SweetAIBelle There are very good reasons for instances to want to be completely cut off from Meta. The only way to avoid fracturing is for _every_ instance to defederate from them. 🙁

@apocalypse_kitten I'm a believer in moderating for what people actually do, rather than what they might do.We start getting trouble from the meta instances and their mods aren't taking care of it, defederate from them then.(In the meantime, convince people on the meta instances to migrate to ours instead... :sweetunsure: )

@SweetAIBelle It's not like Meta doesn't have an established track record already! It's not a question of expecting them to fail to moderate objectionable content (censoring unobjectionable content is more likely). The problem is that Meta's users are the product, and we don't want our personal data being fed into their systems, and we don't want their paid-for content being sent out into the Fediverse. And we don't want them to destroy the fediverse with embrace, extend, extinguish.

@apocalypse_kitten @SweetAIBelle It's easy enough for individuals and sites to block users and/or the site. Defederating it doesn't help. If anything, it might show that there is a thriving community outside of the walled garden the way AOL people eventually figured out that there's a WORLD wide web instead of living in AOL's little garden.
