The #Reddit protests have been a disaster, blackout with an end date, some subs deciding to continue it but many just giving up, now subs that don't give up are being forced open by admins/replacing mod team, subs that open of own accord becoming shitpost subs as a "protest". Within a week or 2 people will get bored of the shitposting and go back to using the sub like normal and absolute nothing will have changed. Like Mastodon with Twitter, Lemmy has seen massive growth but Reddit has not seen a mass exodus of users.

@BrodieOnLinux I'm having difficulty enjoying Lemmy. The post weighting sucks, I subscribed to the technology "subreddit" and that has taken up my entire feed, posts linger at the top forever, lots of communities that are on Reddit just don't exist, slow loading. Not to be a downer :grinmsn:

@BrodieOnLinuxEven if a lot of people don't switch, I'm sure some will. Plus this event will reflect poorly on Reddit, hopefully they'll be a bit more conscious of their users in the future.I mean if nothing else, people are now aware that alternatives exist

@BrodieOnLinux This is why independent forums shouldn't die, handing control over to one corporation is a terrible idea. Centralization of technology has had terrible outcomes for internet communication.

@BrodieOnLinux were we really expecting anything to actually happen?

@BrodieOnLinux It’s the FOSS copycat disease. None of the popular online platforms got huge because they created inferior copies of successful platforms with tweaked governance. The only kind of applicable exception I can think of is Bitwarden, but that’s a pretty sophisticated tool and isn’t dependent on others using it. What will ultimately kill #reddit will be something that is nothing like Reddit and most likely developed by a commercial actor.

@BrodieOnLinux But a shift is happening. People are once again learning about the major downfall of corporate social media. Each time this story repeats, more people learn about the #FediVerse and the options within it. Switching over to decentralized platforms will take time but it is happening. And it will continue to be a steady trickle.

@BrodieOnLinux fediverse is a bit confusing for anyone new to the idea, hope more tech enthusiasts like you continue making helpful videos about getting started in this. decentralization is a very powerful idea that i feel will be a game changer if people understand it better and its value.

@BrodieOnLinux I stopped using Reddit and don't miss it so far, but I'm really not enjoying Lemmy/Kbin either. I thought since Twitter->Mastodon was such a smooth transition for me it would be easy, but it absolutely isn't.

@BrodieOnLinux Based on the other posts and also comments in this thread, I think the problem is of two folds:1. People are expecting #lemmy/ #kbin to be a drop-in replacement (UI, content, moderation, etc.)2. People are expecting to see the same volume of content without contributing. They just want to be passive consumers. This is not specific to #fediverse but rather the whole FLOSS world. Majority of people want to consume without giving back by contribution or donation.

@BrodieOnLinux Lemmy is sadly inactive and Jeboa unready for the masses, but under active development luckily. Their timing wasn't the best.

@Nuuskis @BrodieOnLinux Kbin seems to gather activity quite well now. There could be other alternatives to Kbin and Lemmy out there - that are technically better - but not many are aware about. If such potential ones exist, would be great if someone did shout outs.

@Linux @BrodieOnLinux thanks for telling me this. I'm not sure did I understand correctly. So Kbin is not same as Lemmy, but can communicate with Lemmy and Mastodon?I've years angry for how fragmented Linux is just to confuse first time users to the max level. Hopefully fediverse doesn't reach that level of fragmentation too.

@lambalicious @Linux @Nuuskis No I mean, I'm paying attention to what's going on and can't keep track of the alternative platforms. I would even begin to expect someone who's only ever used reddit to be doing so
