Uh... little FYIIf you are on #Mastodon and you post PUBLICLY you are basically SHOUTING your message across the internet..If you don't want the NSA or any other data scraper to get your posts DO NOT post public! :blob_derpy: It doesn't go both ways...There are dozens of other post options that do not push your posts over the web with ActivityPub to thens of thousands of servers

@stux I was wondering about that. A post is duplicated on other instances or linked? If I deleted my post is it deleted on every server instantly?

@stux Thanks fort he warning, but I am a little confuzzled. My understanding is that hashtags only work when posting publicly. Is this not the case? Also, I was under the impression that even a public post only gets picked up by other instances if someone from that instance boosts it. I should probably just RTFM :)

@BrentInMasto @stux it gets there if one or more people there are following you. or if one of the people there boost it. or if their server subscribes to a mutual relay.

@stux Thanks for mentioning the post options. Up until this point I hadn't seen the need to explore that, but it was quite easy to find and use.

@lamp Cool, thanks for the education! Knew, but had forgotten, about the follower route and didn't know about mutual relays. Will hashtags work if I post unlisted? I generally use unlisted mode, but when I'm using hashtags I switch to public. I also try to remember to only make the first post in a thread public and then do the rest unlisted.@stux

@stuxIf you don't want a message to be potentially public, you should never post it on Mastodon in general. It was the same with Twitter. I don't know what these people aren't understanding about this: these are not secure platforms, they were never built to be secure platforms, they aren't meant to be secure platforms, they don't have to be secure platforms, and in fact they shouldn't be secure platforms. The point of these platforms is to mass communicate, and they are very good at that. The only issue is people using it for things completely counter to the purpose it was built for.

@stux @steve The internet itself is inherently insecure. If you don’t want it scraped, encrypt it, or even better, don’t post at all.

@stux the only post that I can assume won’t be public and in a database are the post that I set to followers only or posts that I set to private. @fbi@bird.makeup I know your listening but I don’t care.

@stux @jose @aroom The AP specs leave a little wiggle room, though. I'm still wary of how broadly Meta will interpret “not allowed to be removed … at the receiver's discretion.”

@stux I've read a long Reddit thread yesterday about alternatives and defeatism of saying "everything Internet is public". People are concerned about Lemmy, Matrix and alike prioritizing data persistency, that it is a step back for privacy and in direct contradiction.I think this is utterly wrong - you can hide only so much by retrospectively deleting all that juicy stuff about yourself, but it may be too late already. It's not defeatism, it's common sense: going clean, learning how to best use networks and securing your devices.
