It was shaping up to be a pretty normal ho-hum midweek here but today - momentous events! Ok one is more a milestone. The largest of the #sunflowers will by this time tomorrow be officially as tall as me, so it’s now over 6 ft (1.83m) high. The other is the appearance of a mystery #bird - a black-headed grosbeak. Maps show it to be well east of its normal migration range. Hope this one finds its way back to its herd. Or not, if it prefers the rebel & loner lifestyle.#gardening #BackYardBirds

@Trilobyter undoubtedly, the grosbeak saw the sunflower and has plans for it. 😂

@Trilobyter Congrats on the sunflower, it's too windy for them here so I'm rather envious.

@RIDDLES yes, Mammoth Grey variety. Seed packet says they can grow up to 12 ft (3.66m) but this one won’t get that tall, I think the soil here - near impenetrable layer of clay about 8 inches down - prevent them from reaching their full potential. Still it’s already beat the tallest I had last year and probably has another foot to go before it tops out. And I have several more growing.

@Trilobyter I started several sunflowers again this year. Last year, they reached 7 feet. This year, they're only about a foot tall. We've had rain for most of the past week, and today I noticed that while they're short, they've hit multiple blooms.I might start a couple more, if it ever stops raining 🤣(And those are gorgeous 😍)

@CharJTF I planted 3 at about the same time in my front garden but they are very different in height, the other 2 are well more than a foot shorter than this one. I have a couple more little ones growing now, hoping to stagger them through the summer.

@pascaline I keep expecting the flower head droop signaling the upward growth is ending, the tallest ones I grew last year barely hit 6 ft (1.8m) before that happened, but this one just keeps going. It is a different variety of seed than what I planted last year but both promised to produce plants that could go over 10 ft (3m) high.

@Trilobyter Oh, I see! Well then, let's wait for this beauty to reach its limits. Will you use its seeds? For the birds maybe, and keep a few to grow new ones next year?

@pascaline I’ll keep some seeds and let the birds & squirrels take the rest. But I still have a lot of them left in the packet that this one came from. I’ve got 5 plants currently growing and will keep planting a seed or 2 every week or so through the summer so I always have at least one blooming.

@tropenfisch that’s a thought, it would make a cool time-lapse, but for one thing I don’t have a camera I’d want to leave out & running in the 100+deg heat we’re currently experiencing. However, there is a window with a view of the sunflowers…

@Trilobyter I've kept my last 2 mobile phones, both failed due to the USB port (which, fortunately, still supports slow charging). Via Wifi, data can be well transferred (I use Syncthing). On one, I have installed Framelapse: does what it is supposed to do. What is a threat to a failed device? The tripod may be more of a concern...

Another #sunflower update - after surviving the hurricane-force thrashing of Wednesday night’s #thunderstorm and getting braced back upright, the tallest sunflower has reached 90 inches (2.29m). As you can see the #flower head is starting to open so probably by tomorrow the head will droop over & therefore this is probably its maximum height. Pretty good but my goal is to get one of these suckers to >10ft (3.05m). I have others growing so we’ll see…#gardening #photography #FloweringFriday

@WordenPond I added compost to the front garden soil and also some fertilizer in the early spring before I planted the seeds but nothing since.

@WordenPond maybe so, everything is due for a fertilizer boost, I hesitate a little because of the current heat wave we’ve been experiencing, temps up to & over 100 deg F.

@Trilobyter It's my experience that my tallest plants are those growing in the shadiest north-facing spots because they're constantly reaching (and I don't water but so they're better fed too). For example, my teasels in morning sun are half the height of my neighbour's in perma shade, whereas my foxgloves in partial shade are much taller than everyone else's with more light.

@haq these are my 3 tallest and they were all planted about the same time in the same bed. My house faces NW so they have morning shade. They are from the same seed packet. You can see they vary quite a bit in height the middle (closest) one is around 2 ft shorter than its big sister and has a skinnier trunk, though both are producing their flower heads at the same time. The shortest has a thick trunk like the tall one and looks to be a ways away from blooming. So 🤷?

@Trilobyter Small sample problem, naturally. /shrugs with youOne of my neighbours and I have been considering growing simultaneous sunflowers for about three years but it's windy here and I think they'd grow too tall for support stakes (and I only have one narrow wall tall enough even if sunflowers were wallflowers, which they're not). I don't know anyone else around here who has grown them. So I'm very interested when I see other people's online.
