They were convinced the metaverse was going to be the next big thing, and lost a lot of money on it, not just their own but investors' too. Then bluesky appears, and normies are hyped because Jack is making the new twitter, and facebook is suddenly interested in the fediverse, which was all but irrelevant until the reddit blackout last week. With their user base dying off, figuratively and literally, they will probably try to either bridge their platforms or launch several AP servers before the public launch of bluesky in hopes of attracting people interested in decentralized technology (like 5 people total, most of them are already on fedi). It's hard to tell what the long term plan is, but I don't think they have one.

This had nothing to do with Facebook or Google.There's a similar story about Google Reader and how it killed RSS. Also complete bullshit.

You mean P2P wouldn't have that problem?What about a system where conversations are split into two queues, sending and receiving?If Facebook made a SimpleX server ("proxy"), people who use it would only be using it to receive messages. People who want to send messages to them have to be able to use it without an account. And the FB useds themselves would use a different server to send messages to people not used by Facebook.How could they "embrace and extinguish" under those circumstances?They would have to change the protocol.
