There is a strong rumour going round that some Fediverse developers and admins have held secret discussions with Meta/Facebook under NDAs.The Fediverse is supposed to be an alliance of open projects built by a broad grassroots base. Its devs/admins are not supposed to hold secret backroom discussions with people who have a horrific track record (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/dec/06/rohingya-sue-facebook-myanmar-genocide-us-uk-legal-action-social-media-violence).Facebook/Meta is in effect a sociopathic corporation (https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/growth-at-any-cost-top-facebook-executive-defended-data). Nothing good will come of talking to them.

@feditips Meta created React and LLaMA which are pretty awesome. They have some redeeming stuff.

@shipp @feditips React is one of their greatest technical acts of dumping toxic sludge on the web. Not at all redeeming.

@dalias @feditips could you elaborate? It's very widely used.

@shipp @feditips It's very widely used to make sites consume 10x more resources and have atrociously bad ux and accessibility problems by virtue of turning everything into an app that does its own async content loading logic instead of semantic documents.

@dalias @feditips well you're on a website that is an example where it doesn't work as a semantic document.

@shipp @feditips Memes aside, you should understand that Facebook worked, and actually worked, unlike now where it's unusably slow and jumps around and stuff disappears never to be seen again, before React, with simple AJAX.React is what ruined Facebook technically while Groups ruined it socially.

@shipp @feditips The dichotomy is not "React vs static semantic". React is just a particularly bad, costly, anti-semantic and anti-accessibility way to do dynamic content.

@feditips Isn't the whole point of the fediverse that it's decentralized and thereby less vulnerable to this kind of thing? If eg Lemmy were to get zucked, wouldn't we just collectively shrug and migrate?

@loopgru @feditips but then what would we have to be outraged about?
