Things I can't stress enough for users just getting into #Linux:+ Don't dual boot. You will eventually have to fix your bootloader. You don't know how to do that yet.+ No, you don't want to install Kali Linux. Just stick with something like Ubuntu or Mint.+ Wine will not solve all your problems.+ Please don't just enter the first CLI commands you find on the internet. First make sure it's even relevant to your operating system.+ Seriously, what is the obsession with Kali Linux?

@art l337 hacker wannabes that can't figure out how to install Kali are as funny as Arch users that bork their system with an update. #linux

@art also distro matters less. More finding what package manager and desktop environment you vibe with.

@art I mean it's true - Windows will almost certainly mess up your bootloader during some update or automatic "repair" routine. I learned this the hard way 😭 It helped installing Linux and Windows on separate drives and it's probably a good idea to have a printout or pdf of "how to fix my bootloader" just in case.

@art learning how to fix GRUB ain’t that bad a skill to have. That’s what I had to do when I started. Backups!!

@art I think it's all the bragging power of having an "haxor linux distro" as main driver for some users, especially younger ones moving their first steps in security. as someone that has used Kali (and Backbox back in the day) for work, I always recommend people to use it as a clean VM for each assessment, if they really want to use it. however these days I'd just add the Kali repos to Debian

@art The Kali thing is a total mystery.I am (currently, rather inactive though) a moderator on the itsfoss community forum and every couple of weeks I stumbled upon questions from totally new Linux users who were using it. It's for people doing IT security, not for beginners.Side note: I never had an issue with dual boot (first Lilo, then Grub) in >20 years. I guess, I was very lucky.

@art I started with NobaraOS (Fedora based OS) and the Gnome DE. And everything works for me but I had 4 months of research and 1 semester of open source software before I installed a linux distro

@art disagree with the first point. If new people don't dualboot, they will stay on their mac/Windows/whatever.

@art I remeber when I first started, I installed fedora. I barely knew how to use windows, so I didn’t really get gnome. Naturally I ended up switching to *checks notes* Parrot OS. I stuck with it for a long time, but I eventually wanted to use KDE and it wasn’t working for some reason, so I switched to Arch cuz I felt confident enough using it. It’s a lot easier than I expected, though I didn’t use the AUR. Eventually I decided that, having only one computer at the time, I wanted to have something less likely to break, so now I’m on Fedora. A fairly up to date system AND stability. What more can I ask for?

@WhiteBlackGoose VM is a better way to learn Linux without committing. If you break your Linux system in a VM you're less likely to bring your Windows system down with it when you attempt to "fix" it. I had a friend just yesterday destroy his entire boot trying to remove Linux. Out of frustration he deleted all the partitions. He lost all the windows work he was trying to do.

@art if it was my friend, I would help them install dual boot correctly (actually, already did it multiple times).VM sadly is laggy and slow. You can play it for 5 minutes, but doing anything on it for a week or two to test it is practically impossible.Besides, dual boot means you will have to install stuff all over again when you move to bare metal
