@SpockResists Better than Trump; better than W; but an appallingly bad President. He did not even try to stop either of the two wars. He let Wall Street completely get away with thousands of felonies. He loved fracking, and fossil fuels: https://archive.thinkprogress.org/obamas-worst-speech-ever-we-ve-added-enough-new-oil-and-gas-pipeline-to-encircle-the-earth-e5e24a156910/His plan for Gitmo was to move the prisoners to the US, and establish a Constitution-free zone.He was our last chance, squandered. @CDeorum @SpockResists Obama signed off on a trillion dollars worth of new nukes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renovation_of_the_nuclear_weapon_arsenal_of_the_United_StatesIt is an obscenity. If humans keep building nuclear weapons, one day we'll use them. The ACA fixed nothing. It's why I left the US forever.I wept with relief when Obama was elected. @CDeorum @SpockResists Can you give an example of this "misinformation" I have given?Which claims did I make that are false, or even misleading? As i said, I welcome the use of facts, reasoning, logic, or citations to peered reviewed papers.Let's center on the first claim. In his campaign, Obama talked about "the oceans ceasing to rise" but in fact was extremely friendly to fossil fuels and fracking.By the end of his second term, the US was the world's largest oil exporter.

@TomSwirly @CDeorum @SpockResists I've heard the claim that drone strikes increased greatly under Obama, and political opponents tend to pin that on him ("the drone strike president"), and I'm fairly sure that all the evidence and stats bears that out, but I do wonder (on the use of drones specifically) whether it was not an inevitable outcome of the US military industrial complex + perpetual wars, and trying to *stop* their use would have been deeply political unpopular.

@TomSwirly @CDeorum @SpockResists As bad a president as Obama might have been, he's still ultimately one man who, hopes and dreams aside, would have gotten crushed by the system on all sides.I remember a snippet from an interview where Michelle Obama (in term 1) was keen on getting kids to eat healthier, and that initiative ended up being shut down by the food lobby. How much of the Obama presidency outcomes are truly attributable to the actions and attitudes of the one man?

@TomSwirly @CDeorum @SpockResists Picking one of your points at random: "Signed off on a trillion dollars in new nuclear weapons"In order to get a bill like that into the system, you need a huge amount of well-entrenched and moneyed interests across the nation. A lot of people will have an interest in getting those nukes built, for hundreds of different reasons (a big one being "military spending in my state is a job creator").So what would the alternative have been? @TomSwirly @CDeorum @SpockResists There's an old saying - politics is the art of the possible. I tend to apply that when analyzing stuff like this, because it's extremely easy to don 20/20 glasses and claim what someone *should* have done, long after the fact, and without having to contend with any of the pressure.I think there's another set of arguments that could be true, boiling down to "The world would have been worse off without Obama", even if his individual actions aren't meritorious.

@TomSwirly @CDeorum @SpockResists My view is further informed by The Dictator's Handbook (if I taught a politics class, this would be day-one reading material). If you haven't read it yet, I strongly recommend it, because it provides a rational and consistent explanation for seemingly-bizarre politics - like defending Wall Street and going to bat for BP after the spill.Knowing all of that, I'm a lot more hesitant to fire from the hip and blame individuals for civilization-wide catastrophes.

@TomSwirly @SpockResists We're definitely looking at this from two different points of view, and yes:* I cannot refute that Obama had many choices and chose poorly, repeatedly* I cannot refute that Obama "did not try his best"My idea is not that the President is completely powerless, but that the President is only one piece of the puzzle, and there are more keys to power than just the highest office (Dictator's Handbook), and we need more than heroes (Truth to Power) to make change happen.

The 1949 Geneva Conventions, ratified by the United Nations, explicitly provides protections for not only the wounded, but also for medical and religious personnel, medical units, and medical transports. Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court states that “Intentionally directing attacks against personnel, installations, material, units or vehicles involved in a humanitarian assistance or peacekeeping mission in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations” is classified as a war crime. The law also states “intentionally launching an attack in the knowledge that such attack will cause incidental loss of life or injury to civilians” also constitutes war crimes for the guilty party. Through the drone strike program and double-tap attacks, there is no question that former President Obama and his administration violated international humanitarian law. This. Liberals living blissfully unaware of the crimes and horrors of “their” presidents yet recognizing how dumb and ignorant it is for Republicans to defend “their” president is one of the biggest liberal fallacies.

@Erik @SpockResists @Raven47 @mybarkingdogs The biggest joke is calling Democratic party folks as "The Left". There is no "Left" left in the US.

@abhijith @SpockResists @Raven47 @Erik @mybarkingdogs Nonsense. Leftism has never actually been about economics or class conflict and has always been about artificially elevating the lowest, most disgusting and repulsive elements of humanity in the name of "equality." So the contemporary left worshipping trannies and black street thugs is the highest evolution of leftism, and not a deviation, and sucking off globalist megacorps is a trivial price to pay. This is who the left really is and has always been.

@wogan @SpockResists Not invade!!!What possible business does the US have invading Middle Eastern countries? It'scertainly against international law, but more, he didn't go to Congress, so it's against US law too: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/09/how-obama-ignored-congress-and-misled-america-on-war-in-libya/262299/After watching the carnage in Iraq, what sane person would start another war of choice - while the US was embroiled in two other wars of choice?"What were we supposed to do if not commit genocide?" Why is this even a question?

@Erik @Outersider@kolektiva.social @SpockResists Okay, let us assume that a US President never give orders to perform a war-criminal act during his tenure. So, then nevertheless indict the US presidency as a institution to the Hague tribunal?

Do you understand what “commander-in-chief” means? Also the “let’s assume” portion really sends me. I mean, is Putin a war criminal to you? He probably never DIRECTLY gave orders to commit war crimes, so why should he be put on trial? The point is that the invasion of Iraq that happened under the Bush and Obama presidency was ordered to happen by them in the first place. If they know anything about their military they are aware what that military is capable of doing and what systemic problems in it exist. If Putin sends troops to Ukraine, including Wagner Group, and then acts surprised when there were war crimes committed, then no one would believe that nonsense. However, the U.S. Military doesn’t put people on trial for war crimes, the U.S. government doesn’t even recognize The Hague decisions for the protection of their own soldiers: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members’_Protection_Act So, absolutely. The CoC is responsible for the actions of his military. The president should be put on trial if invasions and wars they started led to countless of war crimes happening.
