@skylar I like them for situations where I have to connect stranded and solid wire, which is not that common

It's a European thing; they're easy to install and look cleaner, but are poorer performance as far as resistance is concerned. Since they run 240v over there they don't really care about conductor resistance in most household applications for the same wattage.

@anondyne @skylar wire nuts are fine if you use a new one in the right sizeI'm not super confident in the dinky contact area of a lever nut on solid wire when something is drawing 10+ amps

@skylar I happen to have some, but I didn't go out of my way to get them. I think I got one of those assorted sizes packs and that was what it came with.

@deprecated_ii idk, i seem to encounter a lot of connections between solid and stranded, and the additional effort needed to put the stranded wire in first is made up for by stranded being wonderfully soft and flexible

@anondyne but consider this: i bought a pack of wire nuts once and they seem to be reproducing in my toolbox. i've been continuously using them, especially the yellows and the tans and the reds, yet they never seem to decrease in number.

I made the mistake of taking a half empty leftover quart size tub of mixed wirenuts off a jobsite once the job was finished. The damn tub refilled itself in under a month after I left it in a cabinet undisturbed!

@deprecated_ii @skylar The bus bar in the lever nuts have plenty of safety margin, they are pure German autism, and having the positive spring contact ensures the connection stays consistent over time. Wire nuts tend to come loose eventually due to thermal cycling of the wire. Biggest thing for me though is that you can actually visually confirm that whatever idiot was doing the wiring that day did it correctly or not. Wire nuts are always a mystery and I always assume they were done incorrectly.
