@bleedingphoenix I meanmy experience with void was limited packages, it was the reason I leftnow that I actually understand its build system I might go back (also not with void and I think alpine they run musl libc so some proprietary things my not work)

@skylar @theorytoe @EdBoatConnoisseur @bleedingphoenixi've heard very good things about void back when it was shilled to mealpine is really interesting, in their quest to get as far away from gnu as possible they compiled all of it with clang, and use busybox for its coreutilsbecause of its small footprint and embedded linux focus it uses openrc instead of systemd (like gentoo)other options:arch (gay lol) or any of its derivatives if you want to see a rolling release distroartix (arch without systemd) if you want to try out other init systemstagging in @OrangeBomb i think he runs slackware and can shill that better than i can for youas for gentoo, if you're new to linux you're not ready for that yetonly when you've used linux long enough to have a bone to pick with any of the distros above will you be ready to cook your own linux distro to orderremember gentoo is a meta distro so you can just do whatever the fuck you want lol

@bleedingphoenix Alpine would be great as a daily driver if the repos had all the common packages for desktop / laptop use. Maybe there are third party repos for that. But as it stands Void is the better option. Runit is also a realy nice init system. I use it on Artix, btw.

i like Mint a lot, Cinnamon's a nice DE that helps when coming off of Windows. if i get Void i'll probably run a WM or the like to shake things up, since i feel Mint's helped me understand how linux works.

@rohrkrepierer >repos had all the common packages for desktop / laptop usethis is the big issue for me, i want my software to work more than i care about specific distro quirks. Void seems to run everything i looked up (Steam, newsboat, etc) so that definitely piqued my interest.

@bleedingphoenix @theorytoe @EdBoatConnoisseur @OrangeBomb @skylarbasedi started out dual booting ubuntu in like 2010, then mint then i finally got so sick of systemd's start-stop bullshit in 2017 that I dove straight into gentoo and havent really looked back sinceif you have the time or patience then I'd recommend you at least try it, the handbook is piss easy to follow and by the end of the ordeal you should have a fully functioning linux tailored to whatever the hell you felt like installing1 year of using gentoo taught me more about linux than the 7 years of dual booting and nuke/reinstalling every time there is an issuehttps://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64:heart_gentoo:

@bleedingphoenix Then take Void. I really want to use Alpine on desktop at some time in the future, because it is truly minimalistic and GNU is bloat. But before that happens there really need to be more packages. Who knows, if I ever get my ass moving maybe I will make a user repo with everything I need myself. Alpine really is too good to be confined to containers.

@bleedingphoenix @theorytoe @bronze @skylar Well, void is noob friendly. The way i install devuan unstable is not for everyone, i do a devuan netinstall, don’t select any DE package, after the installer has updated the selected packages i do myself a favout and change tty, chroot into the isntalled system and install networkmanager, nmtui, aptitude and the wifi card firmware, then switch back to the installer tty, finalize the isntall by choosing init system (only good options are sysvinit and openrc) and reboot. On the new system and with working internet i sudoedit my /etc/apt/sources.list to point at ceres, run sudo aptitude update and sudo aptitude full-upgrade, that leaves me with a clean system on the unstable suite ready to install anything i wamt without removing the stuff i don’t want.

@bleedingphoenix @blaaablaaaa Void has DEs set up for use, tho about the choice of window manager i’d say plan it beforehand and avoid xmonad like the plague, most window managers really differ on what language do you like to use to configure them, tho just because you know a language don’t expect a WM vonfigured with said language to be a straightforward experience thanks to the APIs that may be involved.

@skylar @bleedingphoenix its not, the slackware base system uses sets for shit so at install you choose what sets you want and boom, for external software slackbuilds.org has the greatest amount of slackbuilds (you can make your own as well) you can also use something like sbotools or similar things to make it easier (if you have a lot of software to install)

@bleedingphoenix @charliebrownau @blaaablaaaa iirc openbox is what lxde uses, also many small and lightweight setups with floating windows use it, tho it is configured on xml, which for the office work guys is a plus as they know xml like the back of their hands…fluxbox i have never used.the onces i’ve personally tried are compiz, openbox, i3, xmonad, bspwm, EXWM (emacs as a window manager), qtile and awesomewm (which i love-hate but is what i currently use)

@bleedingphoenix @eisai @blaaablaaaa @EdBoatConnoisseur @charliebrownau being that awesomewm doesnt even to remotely similar across configurations most are similar, but the major difference is dynamic vs manualin dynamic the action of positioning/orienting windows is done automatically, whereas in in manual setups, its,,. well manual.dwm, bspwm, dwm are examples of dynamici3, ratpoison (i think) are examples of manual

But at the time though it was so fucking annoying that it made me consider non-systemd options.

@theorytoe @eisai @blaaablaaaa @EdBoatConnoisseur @charliebrownau so with manual, you control the setup via configs, as opposed to dynamic where you do not?the wm i'm currently looking at is herbsluftwm, which is manual tiling and is simple to use.

@bleedingphoenix @theorytoe @EdBoatConnoisseur @blaaablaaaa @charliebrownau I’d say that rather than manual vs dynamic split it’s about keeping things in order vs WTFPL man approachThe Ordnung way:  - you assign windows to spawn only the particular workspaces - the settings you make on a workspace (windows, containers/tabs) are intended to persist between runs. You can either configure them in the WM or make WM remember current setup when you log out (so that it would become persistent setup). You may also automate spawning on login and on switching to a particular workspace, so everything looks much like you restored a session from hibernated state, except it’s fresh and was just opened. - you like to find things where they were the last time. The WTFPL man way: - JUST SPAWN THESE GODDAMN WINDOWS ANYWHERE AND GET OFF MY SIGHT - workspaces exist for momentary tasks, and you never seem to notice patterns in the stuff you do. DmuwuIoUUAAuQXQ.jpe

@EdBoatConnoisseur @blaaablaaaa @charliebrownau @bleedingphoenix Er, windows? The WM is supposed to ease the control for those, no? Well, now that’s something. You never seem to have the need to open, like, several terminals (or other windows) at once? Because what made me feel like biting a cactus when I used awesomeWM, is that it can only split, split and split for infinity, making windows smaller and smaller, instead of tabifying or somehow stacking them another way.__elf_marcille_laios_thorden_chilchuck_senshi_and_4_more_dragon_s_crown_and_1_more_drawn_by_ichiba_youichi__5b7aa6fb1cd0a19f611980176cfebbc9.cr.png

@eisai @blaaablaaaa @charliebrownau @bleedingphoenix Ah, you should have used the monocle layout or the maximized layout, those kinda do something like wot you want, or just float some windows here and there.iirc there is a tabbed container widget for awesomewm but i haven’t tried it, when i need tabbing it usually is for terminal stuff, and in that case i just use tmux to be able to copy and paste any text from any “tab” or just complete text from tmux in nvim

@EdBoatConnoisseur @bronze @theorytoe @OrangeBomb @bleedingphoenix @skylar Hmm… it may be sensible, if you have a designated contamination pool for strange stuff, like running a mail server or dealing with user uploads (archives, .exe’s, .pdf’s with JS) with a high possibility of being contaminated. Basically when you’re an office admin. If you aren’t one, you’re fine as long as you don’t download and run suspicious stuff, keep your firewall rules strict and use sensibly long passwords. If you care about security, firejail is generally enough for suspicious programs, including messengers. I’m also running wine programs as a separate user via sudo and firejail, but that’s more of a convenience measure. It’s easier to find leftover semaphores in a dedicated user’s userspace and simply to nuke all his processes with pkill -9 -u wineservant.  20210307_072023.jpg

@EdBoatConnoisseur @bleedingphoenix @theorytoe @blaaablaaaa @charliebrownau I can respect he who acknowledges that.As for locking down wine, firejail has built-in profiles (in /etc/firejail/…) so you only have to select one. Probably. Though it’s possible even without a profile, $ firejail --noprofile --net=none --noblacklist=$HOME/blahshould be enough. $HOME/blah being the folder where you are pasting inputs and grabbing output files. kalina.webm
