@sidheonline @Wormwood Seconding this.Python is a good beginner's language, and it forces you to adopt a lot of practices that are good. C++ is for people who will absolutely need to learn how to code well in the future, and it is what engineers today learn if they go to any reputable school.

@Wormwood If it's your first coding language, you might want to try Python for its really gentle learning curve and relatively widespread usage. C++ is useful too, though, keep in mind that it involves compiling your code first before running it, whereas Python is an interpreted language so that you can just execute your code without having to do all that.

@Wormwood C is the nigger. Once they get in, they drive everyone else out. The neighborhood starts changing. They start taking credit for others' accomplishments. WE WUZ KANGZ! C invented system programming! Sheeit, C wuz da first programming language! They bring in their drive-bys, their buffer overflows, their inability to appreciate any culture but their ghetto *nix. Truths that were once self-evident become banned and hate speech. They speak in bastardized tongues like eWa_e_cWiO";for(I i=0;i<60;i+=4){V b=V(l[i]-79,l[i+1]-79)*.5,e=V(l[i+2]-79,l . Places that were safe to walk around at night become hostile and dangerous. Programming languages, much like cities, were safer in the 60s because the people would not do such things. C is an eternal welfare state, an endless string of proposed non-solutions that fail to work even though they work for white languages. C continually has the same defects in every culture, every environment, and every time period. Any attempt to accommodate C only drags everything else down. Thousands of volunteers and billions in government and corporate aid for decades aren't helping. Then there are the sundry subhumans defending their need for C in their community. "Those Not-C-s are at it again! They want to replace C! We can't let them even though we gleefully helped C destroy everything else!"

@sidheonline @Wormwood C++ is not very common in jobs anymore. It's still the foundation for a lot of stuff though and good to know if you're REALLY SERIOUS about coding. It gives you a good feel for what is being automated in higher languages. But also your hair will fall out from trying to diagnose memory bugs.

@Wormwood I would not recommend learning C++ as a first language unless you have a serious tutor who can guide you. There’re too many opportunities to develop bad habits or to have things be subtly wrong. There are two general groups of thought when learning programming: “I want to make things” and “I want to know how computers work.”The first generally choose the most popular high level languages with lots of third party support and spend their time sticking together libraries to build something as quick as possible. Popular choices are Python and JavaScript (and it’s derivatives like TypeScript). The latter choose to start at the fundamentals and build up. They focus on learning why things end up being the way they are, and building useful software takes a backseat. A popular choice is C or a simple assembly architecture like MIPS. There’s also an academic subgroup (“I want to know how logic systems work.”) that likes to use lisp and other functional languages. If you fall into the asking why group, a good way to get your foot into the water is to play some of the Zachatronics games; especially the more overtly programming ones like TIS-100 and SHEMZHEN I/O. They’ll introduce you to procedural problem solving that’s vary similar to how most languages work.

@Wormwood As with anything, when you’re uncertain:1. Rewind back to the time when people cared about it.2. Download books they wrote back then.3. Decide for yourself where to go next.I’d advise getting to the closest library and asking the librarian about entry level books about programming, whatever age. Is it about BASIC? Pretty okay. Maybe Pascal? Wonderful. Nowadays you can download and emulate anything, so no worries. Just follow whichever book seems the most fun.In the meantime you can play lightbot and read about really-lowlevel-computer-stuff:Light-bot.swfmachine-code-for-beginners.pdf

@Wormwood Java is the best to learn high level abstract programming and server related stuff. C++ is the best to learn low level programming and memory management. If you really care about learning how computers work I would learn both of those. If you just want to make websites or small stuff then JavaScript is still the most useful, albeit annoying and confusing. Python is good for AI and blender plugins. C# is good for Microsoft shit and also high level abstract programming. If you want to program drivers and work with hardware then C and Assembly are still the best to learn.Scala is just ugly Java with extra steps.Everything else on this list is basically irrelevant. Rust was also an option prior to the big schism that is happening in the gay Rust community.Don't let people con you into picking languages based on what's easy or fast or performant. All of that stuff is heavily dependent on context and there is no such thing as easy or hard programming/software engineering. Only easy and hard problems to solve.

@Wormwood Please don't use anime girls as a basis for learning a language. To answer your original question, it depends. What are you hoping to achieve by learning to code? Is it job training, or do you have a hobby project in mind? For example if your project is an Android app then Java is the logical choice. Each programming language was made for a purpose* and will excel in its specific use case, just like tools in your toolbox. For a beginner I would recommend learning a procedural language like C first. These are the "do this do that" type of languages. And while object oriented languages like Java and C++ can do the same, their object model and infrastructure unnecessarily steepens the learning curve for a beginner. If you have a strong math background you could try learning a functional language like Common Lisp or Haskell first. While they may smell "researchy", they can be used to do anything, Naughty Dog games like Crash Bandicoot, and Jak and Daxter were written in Lisp.*en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_paradigm
