@Evenkeeld @NBS handgun rounds will tend to bounce off of skulls. CNS shot is best bet but not guaranteed knockdown.

@Evenkeeld @NBS I have a rule for defensive shooting: you have to see the front sight on the threat or don't pull the trigger. So no "mag-dumping" here. Accurate fire is a better bet.

@Krez I think his patience is warranted, and he only fired on the cat when it began to charge/pounce.1st pic attached is one frame before he fired, and you can see the cat pouncing/charging at this point. 2nd pic shows after he fires, before the cat retreated but mid pounce. The hiker did well to wait until he was actually threatened, in my opinion.I've had similar run ins with black bear and coyote who were in my space. Gun drawn, but didn't fire because they never charged like this.

@NBS @radix023 Friend of mine wanted to borrow my 45 when going bow hunting for hogs.I told him a .357 would be a better fit, or better yet a .44.The guy at his archery shop told a tale of a guy missing with the arrow, the hog starts charging, 9mm are just knocked chunks of dirt off of it until another guy drops it with a .308.

@radix023 @Evenkeeld @NBS It can be done accurately. The sight or dot becomes a bouncing ball. Speed depending on distance of course.Or you can throw predictive doubles. One sight picture two shots. Repeat. A firm support hand will keep them close together. Again, distance being the determining factor of how fast you can reliably do it.

@radix023 @Evenkeeld @NBS I remember well being in our tent as a bear was ravaging our campsite, 45 in hand, wishing it were a .44 mag.All I could think about was trying to remember where the other tents were and that if it came in I would only have one chance to get it in the mouth or maybe the neck.I was nowhere as skilled as I am now.Fortunately it turned out ok because the bears were relatively tame and it would have been like that guy who shot the famous lion….

@NBS I’ve shared before, but this Mountain Lion encounter in Utah is a good reminder to carry in the sticks. 6 minutes, but worth a watch. https://youtu.be/p25MgRZ9rJcIf a mountain lion gets remotely close enough to me that it can charge and pounce, I am sending a couple rounds in the dirt as soon as it gets in my bubble. They are fast and shit can get real very quickly.

@Murray_N @NBS traditionally hog-hunting spears would have a crosspiece on them so the hog would not run itself on the spear and gore you.

@NBS Politis, the guy that writes all the Missing 411 books filled with true stories of people who get lost in the woods and never seen again, said that statistically it's always the person without a gun, a radio, or a GPS that is the one in a group that disappears and is never seen again. So when he goes into the woods he always carries all three. Be safe out there.

@Klaatu @NBS I'm guessing it isn't really the gun, radio, or GPS that saves him 99.999% of the time. It is the mindset of being prepared and planning his trip. I bet he also checks the weather and dresses appropriately, with layers. And looks at a map. And knows how to build a fire, and a shelter. And how to navigate.

@thoughtcriminal @NBS not really you would think that but a lot of the stories politis covers are weird freaky X-Files like events. Like where they find a body in an area they already searched or it's on a rocky ledge that no one can get at and there's no way the body could have gotten there. Or the person was 10 ft away and disappears while you're talking to them and happen to have looked at a different direction for a moment. The killer woo woo shit doesn't mess with those that can summon help
