That a SBC is described as "Linux-capable" doesn't mean that you absolutely must run Linux on it.It only means that it provides a compatible set of functionality that would allow the Linux kernel to be compiled targeting that hardware without making major modifications to the software.Any interested parties in having something different from Linux can conceivably begin work creating a different OS using Linux as a clutch to bootstrap themselves in the beginning.

Now, if the goal is to heroically code absolutely EVERYTHING from scratch, then, yes. It's incredibly, horribly, dishearteningly difficult in the 21st century to start a compiler, a programming language, a kernel, and a full operating system from scratch on modern Linux-compatible hardware. But then, in that case I would argue that it's not a problem created by people who adopt Linux as a standard, or a problem of the SBC manufacturers.

I wish that the minimal Linux specs were a lot simpler, with a lot less requirements, and that many more OSes were being developed. In a way, that was exactly what Android set out to accomplish in the beginning (a reduced set of Linux functionality that could run on a smartphone ca 2008)But Linux has the merit of having conclusively shown something important: If you define the platform, and you build a community around that platform, others will build the hardware to match your platform.

I believe something similar can happen, with a twist, bringing back platforms and communities of the past, that big companies decided to phase out and let die because those didn't conform with their ideas of planned obsolescence. No community wants to be obsoleted, ever.I think the future of retrofuturistic and neoretro platforms is bright, brighter than it has ever been before, and the last few years were only the prologue. Here's to what's next! 🍻
