i paid money to make this joke happen.it's Pat Fleet - the voice of AT&T phone announcements - Mrs. Telephone herself - cracking a joke about complex numbersi found it on some old 90s forum or BBS and they were just imagining the phone saying thatand i randomly had some cash, so naturally, this needed to happen in real life:

@moffintosh what she sent me was a high quality WAV file recorded from a studio condenser microphone. of course, that's not how we're used to hearing that voice, so i had to apply some post processing.as is so often the case, the raw source material was lost to time. it's hard to keep archives of everything you ever did on a computer for the past 30 years.

@moffintosh typically, if you want to get that "it sounds like a phone" effect, you'll cut below 300 Hz for the bass and above 3000 Hz for the treble. and apply some mild distortion before those cutoffs. and then it'll sound like a phone.

@moffintosh she didn't cost a fortune to hirethe impression i got, when i was doing this, is that she just basically worked as a freelancer for people who needed announcements for various hotlines and she had a microphone and an audio interface and she'd take work from anyone willing to pay, and that was how she made her living. i don't know what she's doing these days.

@moffintosh i think it cost less than $100 to get that recording made. so it wasn't like you needed to be rich to hire her. but i don't think many people knew you could buy her services.
