Toyota is toying with an EV prototype that mimics driving a manual transmission, complete with a stick shift that doesn’t do anything and fake engine noises. Other technological holdovers we should preserve:— Laptops have fake external dial-up modems that make loud squawking noises whenever you are online.— Cellphones have large rotary dials mounted on top of the screen.— Pressing a car accelerator plays a recording of a galloping horse and a person shouting “heeyaw!”

@MissingThePt Ok, you joke, but there's actually a device that mimics hard drive sounds for SSDs installed in retro computers. Also, more to your point, I literally have thought about adding dial-up sounds to the start-up sequence of the serial-wifi modem I made to get my 1994 Mac Powerbook 520c on my network.https://www.tomshardware.com/news/hdd-clicker-v02-restores-aural-ambience-of-pre-ssd-life

@MissingThePt Oh, also, rotary cell phones are definitely a thing. https://skysedge.com/unsmartphones/RUSP/

@MissingThePt I would totally drive a horseless carriage that shouted "Yee-Haw!" every time I hit the accelerator, and "Whoaaaa!" when I hit the brake.

@MissingThePt not sure how prevalent this is in the US, but in the UK a common refrain from those who don't wish to drive Auto (most cars are still manual over here) is that they enjoy the whole... stick/gear thing.Might explain why they're interested in this thing going forward. A *lot* of people genuinely seem to enjoy the action of changing up and down gears.
