I dont remember who said it here on Mastodon, but that made me remember it.If you want to extract a tar.gz file you just download, just think in german.tar xzftar extract ze fileand if you want to create a .tar.gz archice:tar czf tar compress ze fileOfcourse you can add "v" in order to have it verbose :)#Linux

@selea I remember a poster in an old computer lab from years ago that had something similar.tar xzvf"extract zee various files"tar czvf"compress zee various files"I think I read another variant in a Slashdot comment once too. I wonder where this originated?

@thehatfox Good point, but some archives just have one file. Is there another word that could be used for that?

@thehatfox @selea Definitely don’t want to use the v flag though if you’re ssh’d into a remote system. That will absolutely slow down the compression or extraction process since tar has to wait for the terminal buffer to clear. If you really want to see the verbose output of the operation, redirect stdout to a log file. Most people use xvf because they want to verify the paths in the tarball so they can kill the process if they need to.Just use tvf instead. The [t] stands for “test”.So….“test zee various files” or “tell [me about] zee various files”.

@seleaI usually do "a" (auto) instead of "z" (gzip) so it works for all compressions

That's exactly how I as a German try to remember it.Sounds like it is harder for English natives?

@selea personally I find it a lot easier to just remember the letters. x is extract, c is compress, t is test, v is verbose, z zlib, f is filename.I struggle a little with bzip2 and xz (don't know them), but also never use them as the extra compression time does not defend the saved space for me.

@selea To extract you can omit "z". Tar figures out how to decompress. To create archive use "a" - it tells tar to guess based on the filename.

@selea in general you can omit the compression method. But that require you to know what the z (or j or whatever) stands for…
