How could you redesign a truck when you make it electric? The folks at Telo are trying to figure that out My essay on skeuomorphs and trucks — https://clivethompson.medium.com/re-imagining-the-truck-for-the-age-of-electricity-68f0e24662fdIf you’re not a Medium subscriber, here’s a “friend” link: https://clivethompson.medium.com/re-imagining-the-truck-for-the-age-of-electricity-68f0e24662fd?sk=f6bca0f6a65f1c919f1f34af8021dc20

@clive The manufactors are focused on POWER and speed. That's it. they're focused on the wealthy. Their vehicles are not for the everyday American.

@clive love the comparison to the mini. Will be curious to follow Telo and see@if they find success. Love the idea of smaller utility vehicles.

@clive I think people might be going a bit too far in the pursuit of eliminating the hood. The hood is useful! It may contain a frunk, and very important crush space to improve passenger safety. What you want to do is make the hood a bit shorter and a bit lower than is the current trend.A duck bill.

@clive Basically imagine taking 4 or 6 inches off the leading edge of the Rivian and sloping the hood downward. Frunk capacity would not change much, lines of sight would be much improved, safety would not be sacrificed.

@John Yes! That’s a good design … shortens the vehicle while preserving a frunk and bigger crumple zone

@clive "For automakers, they’re incredibly profitable (so they market the hell out of them)" because they aren't subject to the same, more expensive, safety standards as cars. This is the vehicle we need to replace most "trucks". And safe alternative and public transit options.

@clive@saturation.social I'd love to put the batteries underneath the bed, I guess? Lightweight 4-cylinder trucks breaking is a little bit scary at times if there is no load in the back.Don't know about modern trucks, but I sort of hated that about older lightweight trucks. Although, the over-axle capacity of the bed would be impacted and take away some of the load capacity for braking safety.

@count0 yeah that’s a good question about weight distribution, I don’t know how they’re handling that!
