OK, who can recommend a domain name registrar that:- Is boring and dependable and has a rock solid track record- Has a really good UI, including on mobile- Supports as many TLDs as possible - Isn't likely to get acquired by someone else- Ideally supports multiple payment methods as insurance against accidental card expiry I'd settled on Google Domains... but they just sold themselves to Squarespace! https://9to5google.com/2023/06/15/google-domains-squarespace/

I have some hacky code I wrote against the namecheap API, but I'm curious to see what sourcehut eventually has planned with a names.sr.ht registry 🤔https://sourcehut.org/blog/2022-11-15-four-years/

@simon I used to use Namecheap, but they started not being cheap, so moved everything to Dynadot.com 5 years ago. Been super happy with them, have good prices, and seem to fit everything you mentioned: have over a dozen payment options, support all the TLDs I've looked at, manage over 4.5MM domains and explicitly say "no plans to go public or become acquired by a faceless corporation."

@simon the opposite of an endorsement: be careful with NameCheap. They’re playing fast and loose with domain cancellations. A tweet about some "suspicious traffic" gets your domain deleted quickly. Also, for a domain registrar, they can be pretty political after suspending all Russian customers last year. Nothing wrong with the suspension itself, but IMO a domain registrar shouldn’t be too politically involved.

Biggest problem is likely that I am not sure that they support having multiple payment methods. I have never tried (I set it up with ApplePay).Oh, and apparently there is a referral link - https://hover.com/JpP2KUyPThey are run by Tucows.

@simon I’ve been using hover for years and I like them a lot. Porkbun is a new one so they don’t have longevity, but they’ve got pretty good features, are easy to use, and their prices are like 10-25% lower. If those lower prices are sustainable and the company sticks around, I might move. I just have one domain with them for now.

@simon gandi.net is pretty great. I’m a happy 10+ year customer now. They have all the features and services anyone might need, reasonable prices, web apps that work, and when I contacted them, they answered. Seems responsible and reputable.(Caveats: I haven’t tried their mobile web, don’t know their finances, and IDK I just pay 10 years in advance.)

@simon multiple payment methods aside, I have had my payment method with them expire and I got an email that renewal did not work due to payment.. updated the info and moved on. You can also set up an account balance that is used for all renewals, and if that reaches $0.00 they will then use your default payment method. @simon I share your pain. I have been registering domains for 30+ years and have used almost every registrar mentioned in the replies (except porkbun, that was new to me! 🙂). 7 or 8 years ago I started moving most of mine to Google Domains for the reasons you mention. In the past 2 years, I started to move domains over to Cloudflare, as I became increasingly concerned about Google having too much data about me (and all of us). I have been very happy with CF so far.

@simon I use inwx.com. Regarding payment they allow keeping money in your client account and are really good at reminding you way in advance a couple of times if there’s not enough money in the account to perform renewals, like over a month in advance. As I’m in Germany I usually pay them via bank transfer.

@simon Hover. Have had zero issues with them in over a decade of using them. Literally zero. And the one time I had an issue with a *different* registrar, I transferred it to Hover, who fixed it. Mind, I only use them for registration (I keep DNS, registration, and hosting separate so I can change any of them at will without affecting the others), but they're excellent for that.Mobile UI is perfectly usable (nothing amazing, but does the job), including for DNS if you use them for that.
