@ernie The double trouble of Twitter and Reddit going to butts in the same year might have finally convinced some people

@ernie @Kye We really slowed down during those first few Twitter migrations. This one seems to be going more smoothly.

@GreenFire @ernie @Kye Yeah, they fled to a place where people get to say total tranny death and not get banned, it's great.

@ernie I am going to keep screaming this into the void before it's too late: What is happening at Reddit shows exactly why we should not federate with Meta if/when they arrive. This place is the alternative. If we join up with one of the most damaging and ruthless surveillance capitalist corporations, we are negating the exact thing that is so attractive about the fediverse to so many people.

@smallpatatas I thought the big selling point of federation was exactly that. Instances could decide to federate with Meta or not as they saw fit.The Reddit situation is not really comparable, precisely because they are a centralized service; if a hypothetical Reddit had been an ActivityPub instance, then they couldn't have tried to charge millions of dollars for access to their API.

@kkeller Here's what I predict will happen to instances that federate with Meta (especially if the large instances do):their numbers will be dwarfed by even a fraction of the 2 Billion Instagram users that will immediately be able to log in.-Meta will continue to push their users the content that keeps them scrolling, engaged, angry(?), divided, etc like they have always done.-Whatever that garbage is, the Meta users will be more likely to boost it or comment on it, b/c that's what they're seeing-So, users on the fedi instance now essentially have a feed dominated by the Meta algo-Fedi users will begin to find they get more of that sweet dopamine engagement if they dance to the tune of the Meta algo-Fedi loses all appeal to the people that might have moved over (we will be told "it's just the same except harder to search and the UI sucks")-Meta quits the Fedi, Fedi is a ghost towntl;dr Meta is too big and will dominate the mind-space, ruining all the good vibes

@smallpatatas I do agree that it's a concern, and something we should keep an eye on. But I also think it's not worth worrying about unless Meta actually creates an ActivityPub service and tries to federate.

@kkeller I mean, Meta has said they are going to, so I really think we need to be having these discussions at a large scale to get prepared. These companies can throw literally billions of dollars at crushing or buying out competition before it gets big enough to be a threat. (Heck, Zuckerberg et al have already gotten TikTok banned in places for essentially no reason!) And the article doesn't really explain why we should be optimistic; it's very hard to run a small email server that doesn't get flagged as spam by the major providers, and they note the history of XMPP. But I'm not as concerned about the survivability of "The Protocol" as much as the continued existence of this thriving, vibrant, and growing community - one that serves as an alternative to the Metas and Twitters of the world. It's taken years to get to this point, where Mastodon/the Fediverse are starting to enter into the public consciousness. But if we don't have a somewhat unified response if/when Meta arrives, this place will be a shell of itself within a couple years max, imo.

@smallpatatas @kkeller The way you prevent the facebergs from taking over your webspace is to make it a place that they wouldn't want to touch with a 10 foot pole. Mastobabies want a neutered internet just like corpos do.
