There was a lot of noise about #Gandi back in March after they were bought but I decided to wait and see what happens rather than panic moving. Today's pricing updates makes me seriously consider actually moving. What domain registrars (and #DNS hosts) do people recommend? (Caveat: no Cloudflare recommendations and I'm skeptical of Route 53 because of surprise bills.)

@jamesog I’m all in on Cloudflare for my domains since they don’t markup their domains, they automatically redact WHOIS contact info when they can (some TLDs don’t allow it) and their DNS is best of breed.

On my list for consideration so far are Porkbun, as I've seen a lot of people mention them, but I don't know what their service or DNS management is like; and Portfast, which is UK-based and has decent pricing.

@admin @beasts Yeah, but quite pricey, e.g. compared to Portfast. I think Portfast support more TLDs too.I’d be interested to hear what Mythic Beasts’ DNS control panel is like, though. A decent panel and API could sway me.

@jamesog @beasts I assume you are fully off cloudflare DNS these days? I use Mythic for my .uk domain's (and Porkbun for the rest) since I generally trust them to be around in some form in the next 10 years, I also use their secondary DNS for my infra domain to patch over a minor black start risk in my infra. The DNS stuff seems.. Okay enough. Mythic staff are defo keen though.I need to move bgp.tools off cloudflare DNS too, but it's one of the "forever todo" tasks. The idea is to move it to a spread of cloud providers, that way I can survive a cloudflare/aws/gcp/azure/oracle outage etc.

@benjojo Yeah, I ditched Cloudflare for everything. That's good info, thanks. One vague thought I had (but requires effort on my part) is to run DNS inside fly.io. But my ideal is to keep my Terraform setup and use a provider that has a decent API. That's the sad thing about Gandi's demise. Their API isn't bad and the Terraform provider works in a much more sensible way than a lot of others (inc. Cloudflare).

@jamesog DNS is one of those things that regrettably(?) cloudflare has a really good product for.Looking for DNS providers who:(A) Support non-exclusive operation(B) Support DNSSEC (If I'm splitting stuff over many providers, DNSSEC actually makes sense)(C) Ideally just support damn BIND zone files. Is really providing few actual good results...For what it's worth, if you want to use one of my NS'es as a AXFR secondary (as I do for other people) you are more than welcome

@benjojo @jamesog https://www.cloudns.net/ - been using them for a few years now, exactly for the reasons you enumerated
