I've started doing this kind of thing a lot - if I'm asking ChatGPT to explain something I'll often throw in a prompt for some extra flavour ("add a sassy quote to each step" for example)Mainly this is for amusement, but I have a hunch this might actually help me absorb the information more effectively as well

@simon This strikes me as very interesting, positive, and dangerous.Dangerous because I thought I had become good at spotting AI "voice" and this throws that right out the window.

@simon this similarity of distance alluded to implies that the TfL tube map is higher dimensional Also when you are on the tube and it’s underground you don’t perceive any turns, it’s as if all journeys in the tunnel are a dead straight line to the destination

@simon I'm hesitant to use it to explain concepts, if i can't verify the explanation easily, i great i might get the pop sci version of the concept just because it's more popular than the correct one, and chat got has a knack at being convincing, but i agree this is entertaining. 😄

@John hah yeah, I can spot default ChatGPT but the moment I ask it to imitate some other style it gets far less obvious

@tshirtman I've developed a bit of an intuition as to when it's likely to produce a useful explanation - generally if it's a non-controversial concept that's discussed extensively at an undergraduate level it will probably do OKIf anyone who's read the Wikipedia page on it could explain it to you clearly then it will do great!

@simon You are aware that ChatGPT just makes plausible sounding shit up, right? When it gets things right, it is a happy accident. Why are you trying to optimize how well you absorb made up nonsense?

@HerraBRE because despite its many, many flaws it turns out to be a fantastic tool for self-learning, once you've figured out what kind of things it's likely to get rightI've been exploring it (and GPT-3 before it) for over a year now, and I've developed a pretty strong nose for when it's hallucinating at meI'm now finding it no more harmful than an over-confident human teacher who occasionally gets something wrong

@HerraBRE I find the important thing when trying to learn something new is to take input from a wide range of sources, and assume that some of them may have errors or may contradict each otherChatGPT (specifically GPT-4, since it's a significantly better model) makes a really good source as part of that

@simon Love this. Having just written a tutorial on vector quantization, I asked for ChatGPT to explain VQ in a few voices, including "a necromancer who is revealing one of the most secret and dangerous Dark Arts of Magic" 🤣 https://chat.openai.com/share/36dbc659-172b-4f30-8749-35b7ab4d0df4
