@ArtistBristol She wasn't being monitored in the last weeks of her pregnancy? At her age the NHS call you in for weekly checks with a midwife. My sister in law just had an emergency caesarean 3 weeks ago when her 38 week check showed pre eclampsia.What an absolutely terrible loss.

@Primalilith @ArtistBristol She should have been monitored the last few weeks of her pregnancy biweekly or weekly depending on how pregnant she was and what her additional risk factors were, but we have a lot of problems in the US. And black women are often rightfully concerned or hesitant about the care they may receive during pregnancy. Too many die and I do not blame any woman for trying to avoid bad providers or racist treatment during pregnancy. One of the OBGYN accounts I follow on Instagram said it won’t actually be known what happened until the rest of the reports come in, but she’s concerned about what the medical examiner said so far. She doesn’t think it should already be ruled a natural death and said that the signs of ‘labor’ they’re saying were there could also just be part of the process after death (this is the account babiesafter35, she’s a mfm in Texas). If it is preeclampsia, it’ll be found in her liver and might be seen also in the placenta. Preeclampsia causes damage to both and to the kidneys too. I was monitored weekly from 28 weeks on by both my obgyn and mfm because I was diagnosed with preeclampsia in a twin pregnancy. My mfm expected babies to be born at 30 weeks and we made it to 34 weeks before we all started to get sick. And preeclampsia was definitely noticeable in my twins’ placentas. I’ve seen the pathology reports, both placentas showed signs of damage and ‘aging’.

@LisbonMuse @Primalilith @ArtistBristol For them no, not much. They’re doing great. Size of an average toddlers and meeting appropriate milestones. One of them has bad enamel on his baby teeth from being born premature since enamel is a later pregnancy thing. For me? Yes when it comes to risk factors for sure. I’ll be higher risk for cardiac problems for the rest of my life. It also has given me high blood pressure, which no one on either side of my family has had before to my knowledge and I know my aunts/uncles/grandparents didn’t have it or don’t. My siblings and my parents don’t either.

@ArtistBristol I’d also like to note we may very well see more of this in the US in the future because information about pregnancy and childbirth is actively being desexed by medical professionals everywhere leaving lay people giving inaccurate information the primary source of sex based pregnancy information online.

We are talking about how sad it is that the US, which has plenty of money, still has women dying from complications during the birth of their child and the fact that the USA also has murder as the number one cause of death for pregnant women. Duh- I even posted a link at the start of this. On top of it, being Black or Native American also increases the likelihood of death during actual childbirth in the US. A fact. And I regularly get told by mothers as well as everyone else that having sexual health classes actually cover pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding beyond the basics of conception and like a video of a vaginal birth is unnecessary because men, especially gay men, don’t go through it and not all women do either. The majority of girls will still grow up and want to be mothers. Even the majority of millennial women are mothers. Maybe we’d have far fewer women dying in childbirth if we did this. We might even have more child free women (maybe that’s part of why they don’t want it). But we can talk about gender identity and like anal sex in detail.

@ArtistBristol I see a lot of women already turning even more to various natural birth sources that also tell you to skip doctor’s appointments, be afraid of routine vaccines, etc. and that demonize inductions, epidurals, and other forms of pain management. That tell women taking Tylenol for a bad headache will give their baby adhd. This is happening because women are being further alienated from medical recommendations in part because they’re being called ignorant and hateful when they say they don’t want to be called dehumanizing terms. I see it daily on instagram for example.

Also specifically because so many bring up gay men to me about this topic. Like gay men are hiring women to have babies for them. Why should they be exempt or excluded from knowing the risks they’re asking a woman to take on that they can’t possibly pay enough to for what they’re asking for? And I have a ton of feelings about how straight men get to choose to ignore what their wives go through. I cannot even begin to discuss how disgusted I am with the husbands of most of my friends who played video games during their children’s birth. One even watched tiktok during his wife’s c section instead of supporting her. And women who think it’s a fucking hardship for men to have to sleep on a hard hospital pull out for a night or two when their wives give birth without complaining. I spent weeks in a hard hospital chair taking care of two premature infants. We all have to deal with minor uncomfortable things on occasion. A night is freaking nothing.
