When was it not? Xenforo costs $$$ and will cut you off from updates for any reason they like (not counting warez kiddies doing risky shit like running nulled versions). A lot of forum software that's FOSS is still around, I know SMF and MyBB are still around.

Yeah PHP forums never died. Even Xenforo is PHP. The issue is; php isn't trendy, forums aren't trendy for someone to write some shit in Rust or something (Josh claims he is but he's currently fighting internet warfare), and most importantly php at least for Xenforo didn't scale well.On the flipside WP and mediawiki are php.

       >but phone posters killed the forum, the ui/ux just didn't transter overI mean look how many retards on sites like KF were phoneposters, and 4chan especially. I disagree on that part, I think the part that killed it were the wave of new NPCs who wanted an "app" for it.

@Rocket@shitposter.club @PurpCat@marsey.moe I see people who make forums today more often use Discourse or NodeBB.Never used them myself so I can't say if they are any good but they do look a little more modern than PhpBB at least.

One huge thing I'm hoping is that federation becomes the norm, and then the independent forums can start to get the benefits of a unified platform without the dangers of a single point of failure.

I should also add too, the reason Reddit and similar sites got big was they were a wild west at one point. No seriously. They had some very high profile gore subreddits, infamously /r/jailbait, and whatnot. For a while the worst that would happen if you made a big megacorp mad is you'd get a DMCA takedown sent to the site and your account banned as opposed to having to handle it yourself. Meanwhile you'd find a forum run by a boomer with a bunch of bullshit rules and DONT POST LINKS TO DOWNLOAD THIS AND THAT while Reddit had no rules. /vp/ and the like really took off after Nintendo sent takedown notices to Pokemon fansites during the BW era and once that happened, they went to the site where the jannies did not give a single fuck about it other than "spoiler it".

The problem is like I mentioned with why Reddit got big, Joe Normie will buckle under pressure easily, like when the FBI is emailing him or a megacorp is sending a DMCA. He wants to live his life of consooming and doing nothing worthwhile at his wagie job or maybe care about his family if he has one (but usually they don't these days).

@Hoss @PurpCat @SuperDicq @Rocket @sj_zero Yep, and even if individuals understand it, it will take a long time before that makes it up to management and a longer time before organization-level comprehension develops. The one that emailed me ascribed to FSE some posts from sneed.social, because they were reading these posts from some FBI Facebook group that was populated by a third-party scraper that thought all of the stuff on TWKN was from FSE (which is why TWKN now requires an account).

@icedquinn @PurpCat @Rocket That was HHVM, which dropped full compatibility with PHP at some point after release of PHP7. Some were using it to speed up their sites, but nowadays there's no point in it since modern PHP is really damn fast and PHP8 got a JIT compiler as well. Not like the pure speed matters much when 95% of bottleneck in backend webdev is in I/O.

unironically want the Eurovision community to do this. They have like 10 or so mods, it’d be nice to have a proper forum rather than a subreddit.FWIW, RateYourMusic has a forum that pops off more than the subreddit lmao.
