Am understanding this correctly? Reddit is imploding because its users are protesting Reddit copying Musk's anti-3rd-party BS? Or is there more to it?

@valorin There's also:* A $700m raise led by Fidelity in 2021 at a $10bn valuation that has since been marked down repeatedly* A drive within Reddit to push for an IPOI think there's another layer of pressure to all this: They have to start turning a profit if they want the stock to be worth anything when they IPO.

@valorin Reddit found out (or maybe they just assumed, I'm not sure) that reddit itself was scraped for training content for OpenAI, and maybe they're seeing similar usage now. They correctly deduced that the content is valuable (it's why people come to reddit), but seem to be acting as if it's *their* content - not the community's content - and so they're acting to "preserve their investment", even though everything Reddit Inc actually built is just the platform for the really valuable stuff.

@valorin That's right.Setting so many subreddits to private seems to introduce some sort of load issue and takes the whole site down. This is the story of one major 3rd-party developer. How reddit communicated the changes to him.https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/TL;DR: - R: We will introduce API pricing; but it won't be like Twitter. We promise.- A: Great, I'm all for paying you for API access.- R: Here's the pricing: you have to pay us 20 mio. per year. You have 30 days to comply.- A: 🤯

@valorin @stefanzweifel The thing that really ground my gears in that thread: The fact that spez (reddit CEO) claimed they were being *threatened* by Apollo, after all provided the evidence to the contrary.I don't know how it got from "I'm happy to take a $10m payout and you can have Apollo so that I don't have to pay $20m in API fees", to "we're being extorted in bad faith by a 3P developer", but it loudly signals "fuck reddit and everything it stands for, we're going public no matter what".
