@vriska idk what growing up for you was like but my family are all like conservative Christians. my immediate family are basically trump supporters. I grew up constantly exposed to propaganda in the form of like Fox News and AM talk radio shit. so I lacked exposure to anything on the left besides liberalism, which isn't even left-wing and exists to basically turn people into reactionaries either immediately by being cringe or in the long term by being incapable by design of dealing with reaction, and was also heavily propagandized against the gays and probably psychologically damaged in ways I'm not even aware of by the repressive tendencies that instills in a person

@nyx my mother is a liberal and my grandparents were communist hippies. I'm sure that changes a lot in terms of the dumb mistakes of my own youth. my social isolation and self-hatred and general dissatisfaction with my life just took the form of being a shitheel teenager who did petty crime and a lot drugs and made bad music and took part in way too much violence

@ageha @vriska I mean I can't speak for the experiences of alt-right people because that's after my time. like the way I was "radicalized" by the right was basically the traditional skinhead street thug type stuff that has fallen out of fashion, and even then for me it wasn't entirely sincere and mostly just a way to be an edgy idiot as a very unhealthy self-defense mechanism. but I think the edgy appeal is part of it, since even like, overtly racist conservatives in the US will rarely go so far as to be like "yeah and Hitler was right also", like being an open neonazi is basically saying the quiet part loud that most amerikkkans believe but don't say because it's offensive and shocking, and most amerikkkans are also either middle class or are poor but have delusions of being middle class or their condition being somehow better because they live in the US. so they don't say the quiet part loud because that threatens their bourgeois apolitical settler-colonial lifestylebut psychologically I think also reaction preys on the alienated by giving them a simple answer to their alienation that essentially appeals to a very extreme form of ressentiment. they can say like "yeah you're poor or generally unhappy or whatever but actually that's because whites are getting erased, we're the real oppressed ones!!1!" when it's much harder to both accept your alienation in certain ways (like class or gender or sexuality) but also critique your complicitness in oppression (like if you're a white queer in the US you still are complicit in and benefit in some way for settler-colonialism)but reaction offers a convenient answer to all of this and is why it gets popular in times of crisis. that being said though my unironic politics when I was younger and not my (very regrettable) edge for the sake of edge was more like ancap/libertarian, which was really because being raised around conservatives I was raised around the idea of mistrusting the state and it just took awhile for me to take it to an actually radical conclusion

Cos it’s easy, and because it’s made easy by focused pedagogy and training. There’s the accusations like “queers are trying to destroy western civilization (or whatever placeholder)”, that’s just “yes!” but as good thing! or “they’re trying to destroy whiteness!” when there’s a need among those who are subject to white supremacy to interrogate and abolish the construction of whiteness as a coherent stratification of dominance. They’ll say that partaking in an ‘oppression olympics’ or obsession with identity categories isn’t a good thing. When it fractures solidarity among the oppressed, they’re right! Though they tend to take it to places more like “being aware of being oppressed is bad unless it’s me”. It’s wildly disorienting what’s found when what a reactionary sees and what someone else sees manages to overlap. Somewhere between and including “kill the goddamn nazi now, it’s war, fuck this” and “oh yeah I see how that fuck landed there what with all the poisonous guidance provided by those who guide poisonously, maybe I can help to reframe some stuff about being frustrated with and alienated by what’s pissing on their shoes” there’s a state of being able to continually judge the thing and determine one’s approach to a problem like that, based not on some overarching rule but on considered observations of tactics, interpretations, and measured compassionate, informed intolerance.

@nyx @vriska the weirdest part is i grew up in a general moderate left/liberal family. The only put conservative in my family was my late grandfather who was being misled by his more hateful friends. I dont think he had an ounce of hate in his body but he was extremely gullible. My other grandfather who is still alive is p left wing (for his age he is somewhere around socdem, which ill take atleast in immediate family, most of his friends are more left than he is though)The reason i fell for it was youtube aggressively promoted this shit to me at like age 14 (this was late 2016) and a lot of my irl friends were falling down that rabbithole too. I fell down it further than a lot of my friends so when i got out of it they still have those tendencies whereas i spent years trying to unlearn it. So much so i ended up becoming an anarchist lol
